Triplophysa tibetana is a high-altitude stone loach from the headwaters of the Brahmaputra and Indus systems on the Tibetan plateau, one of the largest members of a genus that has radiated extensively across the roof of the world. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the family of small, clear-stream stone and brook loaches, and like most of its relatives it is a bold benthic micro-predator built for cool, fast, oxygen-rich water. It reaches a modest 5.5 in and is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby — most of what can be said about it comes from taxonomic and distributional literature rather than husbandry experience, and its temperature, pH and breeding behaviour in the wild remain genuinely data-sparse.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described by the English ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1905 as Nemachilus tibetana, placing it in the broad, now-obsolete stone-loach genus Nemachilus that once swept up most of Eurasia's small loaches. When Maurice Kottelat restricted Nemachilus (later spelled Nemacheilus) to a much smaller set of Southeast Asian species through his revisions of 1984, 1990 and 2012, the Tibetan plateau species were redistributed among newer genera, and this one was moved into Triplophysa, where it remains today under the Catalog of Fishes.

Triplophysa is placed in Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches, now recognised as the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. The genus itself is enormous and still being actively revised, with dozens of species described from the Tibetan plateau and neighbouring mountain drainages in the past few decades — a reminder that the taxonomy of this group, unlike the long-settled botiids of the aquarium trade, is very much a live area of research.

Morphology

Triplophysa tibetana is a slender, elongate stone loach reaching a maximum recorded length of about 5.5 in standard length, making it one of the larger species in a genus where many members stay under 4 in. As in other nemacheilids it has a nearly scaleless or very finely scaled skin and lacks the erectile suborbital spine that defines the botiid loaches (clown, yoyo, zebra and kin) — that spine is a Botiidae trait, not a Nemacheilidae one. The near-naked skin is nonetheless the important shared feature across the loach superfamily: it leaves the fish more exposed to skin damage, parasites and medication than a scaled fish.

Beyond the FishBase length record, detailed morphological description (fin ray counts, barbel arrangement, colour pattern) is not available from the cached sources for this specific species. As with all nemacheilids its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength medications generally, so any dosing should be conservative and closely monitored.

This is not a species available through the ornamental trade, and prospective keepers should treat any offered specimen with real caution about correct identification, given how actively the Triplophysa genus is still being revised taxonomically. In practice this is a fish for the scientific record rather than the hobby shelf.

Conservation

Triplophysa tibetana is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, an assessment dated 2009. FishBase further reports medium resilience, an estimated minimum population doubling time of 1.4 to 4.4 years, and low vulnerability to fishing pressure (10 out of 100), all consistent with a species that is not considered at elevated risk.

As a high-altitude endemic restricted to the upper Brahmaputra and Indus systems in Tibet, its population is nonetheless geographically narrow, and broader Tibetan plateau freshwater systems face pressures from hydropower development, climate-driven changes in glacial meltwater and grazing-related habitat change.
