Triplophysa trewavasae is a small, little-known stone loach described from the Yasin River in the Gilgit Valley of northern Pakistan — one of many narrow-range Triplophysa endemic to the cold, fast streams draining the western Himalaya and Karakoram. It is a slender, brownish, bottom-hugging micro-predator built for clear, oxygen-rich, high-altitude water, and like most of its huge genus it is essentially unknown outside a handful of scientific surveys: no aquarium trade, no husbandry record, and precious little published biology beyond the original description and its FishBase entry. That obscurity is itself the honest story — this is a data-sparse mountain-stream specialist, not an aquarium fish.

Taxonomy & naming

Triplophysa trewavasae was described in 1990 by Muhammad Rafique Mirza and Naeem Ahmad, two Pakistani ichthyologists who have named numerous Triplophysa species from the country's northern river systems. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the true stone and brook loaches, the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea and the one that has absorbed the bulk of species once lumped under the old genus names Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus.

Triplophysa is itself an enormous genus — well over a hundred described species — of small, scaleless-looking loaches native to the streams, springs and karst caves of the Himalaya, the Tibetan plateau, and Central Asia. The Catalog of Fishes governs the currently accepted combination, and T. trewavasae has not been subject to any documented synonymy or genus transfer since its description; it remains Triplophysa trewavasae Mirza & Ahmad, 1990.

Morphology

Like other members of its family, Triplophysa trewavasae has the classic nemacheilid build: an elongated, cylindrical body that flattens toward the head and compresses laterally toward a slender caudal peduncle, with a pointed snout and small, downward-facing mouth adapted for picking food off stones and gravel. Coloration is reported as brownish above and yellowish on the belly, with spotting on the dorsal and caudal fins — a cryptic pattern suited to a mottled streambed.

No maximum length has been published for this species; FishBase carries no size data, which is typical for many narrow-range Triplophysa known from only a small number of collected specimens. As in the wider Nemacheilidae, the skin is effectively scaleless to the touch, a trait that matters for handling and medication even though this species has no aquarium history to draw on directly.

Habitat

The species is known from the Yasin River and its drainage in the Gilgit Valley of northern Pakistan, part of the Karakoram-Himalayan headwater system. This is high-altitude, cold-to-cool, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated stream water — glacial and snowmelt-fed river habitat far removed from the warm lowland rivers that support many aquarium loach groups. A closely related congener, Triplophysa yasinensis, is also endemic to the same Yasin River, underlining how tightly restricted these mountain stone loaches can be to a single drainage.

Benthic and stream-dwelling, T. trewavasae lives on or near the bottom, sheltering among stones and gravel in current. Its listed resilience is medium, with an estimated population doubling time of 1.4 to 4.4 years — consistent with a small-bodied fish holding on in a naturally constrained, high-altitude range.

Feeding

FishBase places Triplophysa trewavasae at a trophic level of roughly 3.1, characteristic of a benthic micro-predator that feeds on small invertebrates rather than algae or detritus. This matches the feeding ecology documented across the genus: Triplophysa forage over the streambed for aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates carried or living in fast, clear water.

No species-specific dietary study exists for T. trewavasae, and nothing here should be extrapolated beyond the genus-level pattern — this is a micro-predator of a cold, clear stream, not a grazer or scavenger, but the details of its actual diet in the Yasin drainage have not been published.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behavior has been documented for this species. Data on reproduction is marked as unavailable on FishBase, and the original description focuses on taxonomic diagnosis rather than life history. Nothing reliable can be said here beyond noting that, as in other Nemacheilidae, external sexual dimorphism in stone loaches is generally subtle at best and has not been recorded for this species specifically.

Breeding

As with the overwhelming majority of Nemacheilidae, there is no record of Triplophysa trewavasae being bred — or even kept — in captivity. Stone and brook loaches in this family are egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel in fast-flowing water with no parental care, a pattern well established across the genus, but this species itself has never entered the aquarium hobby, so no direct spawning observation exists. The honest summary is that this is a wild, undomesticated fish about which breeding data is entirely absent.

In the aquarium

Triplophysa trewavasae has no aquarium history: it is not traded, not kept, and not described in any hobbyist literature. It is included here as a scientifically described member of the stone-loach fauna of the western Himalaya, not as a species anyone can currently source or care for.

What can be said, by extension from its high-altitude habitat and from the wider genus, is that any theoretical husbandry would need cool-to-cold, fast-moving, heavily oxygenated water rather than a typical warm community tank — the opposite of what suits tropical lowland loaches. As with all near-scaleless loaches, sensitivity to copper and full-strength medications should be assumed. This remains speculative extrapolation, not an aquarium record.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Triplophysa trewavasae as Least Concern, an assessment made on 28 February 2020. Least Concern status for a range-restricted mountain endemic typically reflects an absence of documented major threats or population decline rather than an abundance survey, and should be read in that light.

The species is confined to the Yasin River drainage in Pakistan's Gilgit Valley, a glacially fed Karakoram-Himalayan headwater system. As with many such narrow-range stream endemics, its long-term security depends on the health of that specific watershed — glacial hydrology, water quality and any future damming or diversion — even though no active threat has been documented in the assessment record available here.
