Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa waisihani was described by Cao and Zhang in 2008, in Zootaxa 1932: 33–46, from material collected in the Kax River at Dunmaza Town, Yining County, Xinjiang, China. The authors placed it in the T. labiata species group and distinguished it from its closest relatives, T. labiata and T. herzensteini, by the pattern of the cephalic sensory canals, the structure of the gas bladder, the shape of the pelvic girdle and the form of the anal fin.
It belongs to the genus Triplophysa, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, the largest family of true loaches and one still being actively revised. The original description, and the era it was published in, placed the group within a broader Balitoridae; Nemacheilidae has since been recognised as its own family, but the genus name Triplophysa is unaffected and remains the valid combination under the Catalog of Fishes. No English or trade common name is documented for this species.
Morphology
As described from the type series, T. waisihani is a small, elongate nemacheilid with a grey dorsal ground colour fading to yellowish-white on the belly, crossed by 6–7 brown transverse bars ahead of the dorsal fin and 5–6 more behind it. Like other stone loaches it has a slender, nearly cylindrical body, a small ventral or subterminal mouth suited to picking food from the streambed, and the small, deeply embedded — effectively near-scaleless — skin typical of the family, a point that matters for anyone ever medicating it.
Males in the original description carry breeding tubercles on the upper surface of the pectoral fins and broadened pectoral rays (one unbranched and 4–5 branched), giving the species clear sexual dimorphism in mature, ripe fish. FishBase records a maximum length around 5.5 in. As with most Nemacheilidae, no suborbital spine is present in this genus — that structure belongs to the unrelated botiid loaches — but Triplophysa species share the family's general vulnerability as scaleless, cold-stream specialists.
Habitat
The species is known from the Kax River and, more broadly, the Ili, Emin and Manas River drainages of northwest China's Xinjiang region — cold-to-cool, clear, flowing streams draining the mountains of Central Asia. The type locality sits at roughly 1,469 ft elevation, consistent with the upland, fast-water habitat typical of Triplophysa across the Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding ranges.
FishBase classifies it as a temperate, benthopelagic freshwater fish, meaning it lives near the bottom of flowing water rather than in still, warm ponds. Data on the exact substrate and microhabitat are not available, but stone loaches in this genus generally hold position over gravel, cobble and sand in fast, well-oxygenated current, a habitat this species' distribution and elevation strongly suggest without further data to confirm the details.
Feeding
FishBase reports a trophic level of about 3.1, consistent with a benthic micro-predator that forages along the streambed for small invertebrates such as insect larvae and tiny crustaceans, the standard diet for Nemacheilidae in fast, clear water. No species-specific dietary study has been published.
No aquarium feeding data exists for this species since it has not been kept in the hobby. Based on its genus and habitat, a keeper would expect it to want small live or frozen foods and sinking preparations that reach the bottom, rather than flake that stays at the surface — but this is an inference from its relatives and ecology, not a documented fact.
Mating
The original description notes sexual dimorphism in ripe males — breeding tubercles on the pectoral fins and broadened pectoral rays — the same kind of secondary sexual signal seen across many Triplophysa and other Nemacheilidae during the spawning season. Beyond that anatomical detail from the type series, no observations of courtship, pairing or spawning behaviour have been published for this species.
As a stream-dwelling stone loach, it almost certainly relies on rising flow and temperature cues tied to seasonal snowmelt or rains to trigger spawning, as is typical for the genus, but this has not been documented specifically for T. waisihani.
Breeding
Nothing has been published on the breeding biology of Triplophysa waisihani in the wild or in captivity. Stone and brook loaches of this genus, where studied at all, are typically egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care, and this species has never been reported in the aquarium trade to be bred at home.
Given the total absence of aquarium or captive-breeding records, the honest statement is that this species is not known to have been bred in captivity, and any breeding account would have to be extrapolated from its genus rather than from direct observation of T. waisihani itself.
In the aquarium
Triplophysa waisihani has no documented history in the aquarium hobby. It was described only in 2008 from a single river system in a remote part of Xinjiang, and no care reports, import records or hobbyist accounts of the species could be found. It is reasonable to assume this is a cold-to-cool-water fish, given its temperate classification and upland type locality, but no verified temperature or water-chemistry range exists for it.
As with any Nemacheilidae, if this species were ever kept it would be expected to need clean, fast, well-oxygenated, coolish water and a bottom that mimics its native gravel-and-cobble stream, along with the gentle, copper-free medication regime that near-scaleless loaches generally require. But this is inference from its family, not a documented care profile — anyone encountering this fish should treat every husbandry detail as unverified.
Conservation
Triplophysa waisihani has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation status beyond Not Evaluated. It is known only from the Kax River and the wider Ili, Emin and Manas drainages of northwest China, a genuinely narrow range for a species described from a single study area, though further surveys could extend this.
With no trade presence, no population data and no formal assessment, there is nothing to report on threats or trends beyond the fact that, like many recently described Nemacheilidae restricted to a small number of Central Asian drainages, its conservation status is simply unknown rather than confirmed safe.
