Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa xiangshuingensis was described by the ichthyologist Li in 2004. It sits in the genus Triplophysa, by far the largest genus in the family Nemacheilidae, with well over a hundred described species spread across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its surrounding river systems in China and Central Asia. The genus itself has absorbed many species once placed in the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus as those groups were progressively split apart through the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries — a common pattern across the stone-loach family, where taxonomy continues to be revised as regional faunas are worked through.
The species epithet points to its type locality, tying the name directly to the place it was collected. As with many recently described, narrow-range Triplophysa, there has been no reason to revise or reassess the placement since description, and the Catalog of Fishes — the standing authority for valid fish names — retains it in Triplophysa. There is no meaningful trade or hobby name; it is known only by its scientific binomial.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum length of 4.5 in standard length, putting Triplophysa xiangshuingensis in the middling size range for the genus — larger than the smallest cave-dwelling dwarfs but well short of the bigger plateau species. Meristic data on file lists 9 dorsal-fin rays and 7 anal-fin rays, values consistent with the compact, elongate body plan typical of Nemacheilidae.
Beyond those bare counts, detailed morphological description (colour pattern, barbel arrangement, fin shape) is not available from the sources on hand, and no photographs circulate publicly. Like other stone and brook loaches, it can be expected to share the family's general build: a slim, cylindrical to slightly compressed body, a flattened ventral surface suited to holding position on stream bottoms, and the small, deeply embedded or absent scales typical of the group, which leaves the skin close to naked and sensitive to handling and medication. Data on this species specifically is sparse, and any finer detail should be treated as provisional rather than confirmed.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Nanpanjiang River drainage in Yunnan Province, southwestern China — part of the wider Pearl River (Zhu Jiang) system. FishBase classes it as a freshwater, demersal species, meaning it lives on or near the stream bed rather than in open water. This places it squarely within the broader Triplophysa range across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the river systems draining its eastern margin, including the upper Yangtze and Pearl River basins, where the genus is especially diverse.
Stone and brook loaches as a family are creatures of cool, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams, and Nanpanjiang tributaries in this part of Yunnan fit that pattern — hill and mountain streams over rock and gravel rather than still or warm lowland water. No specific temperature or water-chemistry data for this species has been captured from the available sources, so those figures should be read as inferred from the family and genus rather than measured for this fish directly.
Feeding
No species-specific diet data has been recorded for Triplophysa xiangshuingensis in the sources reviewed. Stone and brook loaches as a group are bottom-foraging micro-predators, working over gravel and among stones in fast water for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — rather than grazing algae or taking large amounts of plant matter.
In the near-total absence of direct observation for this species, that family-level pattern is the best available guide: a fish adapted to picking small live prey from a coarse, current-swept substrate, with little evidence either way on how readily it might take prepared foods.
Mating

Stone and brook loaches as a family are, with rare exceptions, not aquarium-bred: where breeding has been documented at all in Nemacheilidae, it typically follows the pattern of egg-scattering over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward. That is the most honest general expectation for this species too, but it should be understood as an inference from the family rather than an observed fact — data for this particular fish is simply sparse to non-existent.
In the aquarium
Triplophysa xiangshuingensis is not a fish in the aquarium trade, and there is no record of it being kept by hobbyists. It is included here as a documented member of the stone-loach fauna of the Nanpanjiang drainage, not as a species with an established care history.
If it were ever to appear in the hobby, the sensible baseline drawn from its family and genus would be a cool-to-moderate, clean, well-oxygenated, flowing setup over a coarse substrate — the opposite of a warm, still community tank — plus the general stone-loach caution that near-scaleless nemacheilids tend to be sensitive to copper and full-strength medication. None of this is confirmed for the species itself, and it should not be treated as a validated care sheet.
Conservation
Triplophysa xiangshuingensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. This is the common situation for narrow-range, data-sparse Asian stone loaches known from a single river drainage: many simply have not been brought before an IUCN assessment panel.
As a single-drainage endemic restricted to the Nanpanjiang River in Yunnan, the species would, on general principle, be vulnerable to the pressures that affect small Chinese river systems — damming, pollution and habitat alteration — but no documented population trend or threat assessment exists to confirm or quantify that risk. Given the complete absence of any known aquarium trade, there is no evidence of collection pressure on this species.
