Triplophysa xiangxiensis is a small, eyeless cave loach known only from a single flooded cave system in Hunan Province, China. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone-and-brook-loach family, and like a handful of its Triplophysa relatives it has abandoned the surface world entirely for permanent life in subterranean water — a body plan stripped of pigment and functional eyes in exchange for whatever advantage darkness offers a small benthic fish. Almost nothing is recorded of its diet, water chemistry or reproduction, and that gap is itself the honest headline: this is a data-sparse, single-locality endemic, not a well-studied aquarium fish, and it is not part of the ornamental trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Triplophysa xiangxiensis was first named by Yang, Yuan & Liao in 1986 and formally described in the modern literature by 1992, placing it firmly within Triplophysa, the largest genus of stone loaches and one that has absorbed many species once split across Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus. It sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the true stone and brook loaches, a family defined by small size, a single pair of rostral barbels alongside the maxillary pairs, and a preference for cool, fast, well-oxygenated water.

The species epithet points directly to its home: it is named for the Xiangxi region of Hunan Province in south-central China, where the type locality — a cave known as Feihu Dong in Longshan County — lies. As with many Chinese cave Triplophysa described from a single site, the taxonomy here is stable but the biology behind it is thin; the Catalog of Fishes is followed here for the current combination, and no synonymy issue is flagged in the sources available.

Morphology

This is a small loach, with the holotype measuring 3.5 in standard length and other specimens recorded down to about 2 in SL — modest even by stone-loach standards. Like other cave-adapted Triplophysa, it shows the classic troglomorphic package: reduced or absent functional eyes and a loss of body pigmentation, traits that recur independently across several unrelated cave-dwelling loach lineages in southern China whenever a population becomes permanently isolated underground.

As a nemacheilid it carries the family's near-scaleless, elongate body and small fins built for holding position against current rather than fast open-water swimming, though the specific cave environment it occupies likely has far gentler flow than the fast hill streams typical of its surface-dwelling relatives. Beyond the type description's measurements, detailed morphological data for this species is sparse — a fair reflection of how rarely it has been collected or studied since its description.

Habitat

Triplophysa xiangxiensis is known only from its type locality: Feihu Dong, a cave in northwest Longshan County, in the Xiangxi (Yuan River) region of Hunan Province, China, part of the Yangtze drainage. Specimens have been taken from subterranean water roughly 20 metres below the surface — true groundwater, not a surface stream that merely runs into a cave mouth. No other population or locality has been documented, making this one of the more narrowly endemic members of a genus that already runs to many single-cave and single-spring specialists across the karst country of southern China and the wider Triplophysa range across the Tibetan Plateau and Central Asia.

Cave water of this kind is typically cool and thermally stable year-round, buffered from surface temperature swings, and usually low in food input compared with a sunlit stream — conditions that favour a slow-growing, low-energy way of life. No published water-chemistry readings (temperature, pH, hardness) for this specific cave are available in the sources reviewed here, so specific figures are deliberately omitted rather than assumed; the wider genus is cold-adapted, with related high-altitude Triplophysa optimal in the 43–45 °F range, and a stable cool cave environment is consistent with that pattern, but that is an inference from the genus, not a measurement of this species' cave.

Feeding

No diet data has been published for Triplophysa xiangxiensis. Cave ecosystems of this type generally run on scant food input — leaf litter, organic debris and detritus washed in from the surface, plus whatever small invertebrates persist in the groundwater — and eyeless cave fish typically forage by touch and chemoreception along the substrate rather than by sight, in a manner consistent with the benthic, invertebrate-picking habit typical of stone loaches generally. That is a reasonable inference from its family and habitat, not a documented fact, and should be read as such.

Mating

No information on courtship, sexual dimorphism or spawning behaviour has been recorded for this species. Cave loaches of this kind are exceptionally difficult to observe in the wild — Feihu Dong is a subterranean site 20 metres down — and none of the sources reviewed here document any aspect of its reproductive biology.

Breeding

There is no record of Triplophysa xiangxiensis being bred in captivity, and it is not present in the aquarium trade. Stone and brook loaches as a group are typically egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no parental care, and that is the general pattern for the family; for this specific species, however, no breeding observations exist at all, in the wild or otherwise, and none should be assumed. It is honest to say simply that the biology is unknown.

In the aquarium

Triplophysa xiangxiensis is not an aquarium fish. It is a single-cave endemic with no recorded presence in the ornamental trade, no established husbandry, and a specialised subterranean life history that would be extremely difficult to replicate outside its native groundwater. There is nothing responsible to recommend here beyond noting that this species belongs in its cave, not a tank, and that anyone encountering it should treat it as a conservation subject rather than a stocking candidate.

Conservation

Triplophysa xiangxiensis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, despite its restriction to a single known locality — a situation that affects many of China's cave-dwelling stone loaches, whose entire populations depend on one cave system's water supply and quality. Because it is known from only one cave, threats such as groundwater pollution, extraction, or disturbance to the karst hydrology of the site would still carry outsized risk relative to a widespread species, even though the current assessment finds no elevated threat level.

There is no evidence of aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species; its rarity and inaccessibility protect it from that particular threat. As with many narrow-range subterranean endemics, the long-term outlook for this species remains tied to the integrity of its single cave habitat.
