Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa xichangensis was described by Zhu and Cao in 1989. It was originally placed in Noemacheilus, the old catch-all genus for Eurasian stone loaches, but is now recognized under Triplophysa, the genus that today holds the great majority of high-altitude Central and East Asian nemacheilids following the splitting of that older, broader grouping. NCBI Taxonomy lists Noemacheilus xichangensis as a synonym, with Triplophysa xichangensis as the currently valid combination — a routine outcome of the taxonomic reshuffling that has affected this family repeatedly as Nemacheilus, Noemacheilus, Schistura and Triplophysa were progressively split apart.
The species sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone-and-brook-loach family, distinct from the spined botiids and the armoured hillstream loaches. Its species epithet references Xichang, a city in Sichuan province near where the species occurs, following the common practice of naming Triplophysa species for their type locality on the Chinese plateau.
Morphology
Triplophysa xichangensis is a small, elongate stone loach, with FishBase reporting a maximum length of 5.5 in SL. Like other members of its family it has a slender, only lightly compressed body suited to holding position against current on the streambed, small eyes set high on the head, and barbels around the mouth used to feel out food on the substrate. Nemacheilids as a group carry very small, deeply embedded scales or lack them almost entirely, leaving the skin close to naked — a trait that matters for how the fish should be handled and medicated.
Detailed morphological description beyond the length and generic Triplophysa body plan is not covered by the sources consulted here; like many single-locality Chinese plateau loaches, fine-grained anatomical and colour-pattern data for this species is sparse outside the primary taxonomic literature.
Habitat
The species is endemic to China, recorded from Sichuan and Yunnan provinces on the southwestern Chinese plateau. Sources describe it as a high-altitude plateau stream species, living in the cool, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water typical of Triplophysa habitat across that region.
This is a cold-water fish, not a warm tropical one — a point worth stressing because "loach" in aquarium contexts is often associated with warm, sluggish streams. Triplophysa as a genus is centred on the Tibetan plateau and adjacent highlands, and many of its species, this one included, are tied to specific cool headwater and montane stream systems rather than warm lowland rivers.
Feeding
As a small benthic nemacheilid, Triplophysa xichangensis is presumed to feed as a micro-predator in the manner typical of the genus: picking small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey items from the streambed and among stones in fast-flowing water. None of the sources consulted give a specific dietary account for this species, so this is inferred from its family and genus rather than confirmed directly for it.
In captivity, a diet built around small sinking live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, small invertebrates — with quality sinking pellets would follow standard practice for cold-water Triplophysa species; the fish should not be assumed to take flake readily, consistent with other bottom-feeding stone loaches.
Mating
No specific account of courtship, sexual dimorphism or spawning behaviour for Triplophysa xichangensis was found in the sources reviewed. A Chinese patent describes an artificial breeding method for the species using hormone induction (LHRH-A2 and HCG) to bring broodfish into spawning condition — evidence that the species has been propagated under controlled hatchery conditions in China, but not evidence of any natural or hobby spawning behaviour being documented.
Given this, and consistent with the great majority of stone and brook loaches, sexual dimorphism and courtship in this species should be treated as unrecorded rather than assumed; data here is genuinely sparse.
Breeding
Triplophysa xichangensis is not known to be bred in home aquaria. The one breeding record available is a hormone-induced artificial propagation method documented in a Chinese patent, using LHRH-A2 and HCG to trigger spawning — a hatchery technique aimed at conservation or aquaculture production rather than an account of natural reproduction or hobby success.
Consistent with stone and brook loaches generally, the species can be assumed to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care, releasing eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water; genuine home aquarium spawnings of Nemacheilidae species are exceptionally rare, and none are documented for this species.
In the aquarium
Triplophysa xichangensis is not established in the aquarium hobby, and no dedicated aquarium care account for it was found in the sources reviewed. What can be said follows from its biology: as a cold-water plateau stream species reaching around 5.5 in, it would need cool, clean, fast-moving, well-oxygenated water rather than the warm still conditions many keepers default to for "loaches," plus a fine sand or gravel substrate and rounded stones to shelter among.
Like other nemacheilids it is likely near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, a general caution worth applying even in the absence of species-specific reports. Given how little is documented about this fish in captivity, anyone attempting to keep it should treat these as reasoned inferences from its family and habitat rather than tested advice.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Triplophysa xichangensis as Least Concern, an assessment recorded in the 2022 update. It is endemic to China, restricted to the Sichuan and Yunnan plateau region, and is not reported to face documented population decline.
As with many single-region Chinese plateau endemics, its Least Concern status reflects a lack of evidence for range-wide decline rather than dense population monitoring; the species is not part of the aquarium trade and its main recorded human use is the hatchery propagation described in Chinese patent literature, likely for research or local aquaculture rather than ornamental supply.
