Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa xichouensis was formally described by Liu, Pan, Yang & Chen in 2017 in the Journal of Fish Biology, as a new cave-dwelling loach from Yunnan, China. It sits in the genus Triplophysa, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest of the loach families and one that has absorbed most of the species once lumped into the old, broad genus Nemacheilus (or Noemacheilus). The species epithet xichouensis refers directly to its type locality, Xichou County.
The genus Triplophysa is enormous and taxonomically active, with new cave and spring species from the Yunnan-Guizhou karst region and the wider Tibetan Plateau margin described on a regular basis; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for tracking which combinations are currently valid. T. xichouensis has not been the subject of any taxonomic revision since its description and remains a valid, narrowly known species.
Morphology
The type series — a holotype of 2.5 in standard length and paratypes ranging from 2.5 in SL — describes a small, slender loach with the classic troglobitic (cave-adapted) body plan: eyes reduced to a tiny, barely visible black dot, and skin that is completely scaleless. These are the two most reliable field marks that separate it from surface-dwelling relatives in the same river system. Fin ray counts recorded in the original description are dorsal iii,8, anal ii,6 and pectoral i,9–10.
As in other Triplophysa and Nemacheilidae generally, the body is elongate and rounded in cross-section rather than laterally compressed, built for holding position against current on stream and cave-floor substrate rather than for open swimming. Mature males in the type series show breeding tubercles and a thickened pectoral-fin pad, a common secondary sexual feature in the genus used to anchor themselves during spawning or territorial encounters. Beyond the type description, no photographs or additional morphological work on live specimens appear in the available literature, so details of coloration in life are not documented here.
Habitat
The species is known from a single site: the outlet of a subterranean (cave) river at Xisa Town, Xichou County, in Yunnan Province, southern China. This places it in the karst landscape of the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau, a region riddled with limestone caves and underground drainages that has produced a steady stream of newly described, highly localized Triplophysa over the past two decades. Fish living at or near true cave outlets like this one experience permanently dark or near-dark conditions, cool, stable water temperatures, and little to no primary production, which is consistent with the reduced eyes seen in the type series.
No water chemistry, discharge, or seasonal data for the type locality were available in the sources reviewed for this profile. As with many single-locality cave loaches, the population is almost certainly confined to a narrow hydrological system, making it inherently vulnerable to any disturbance of that specific cave or its outlet stream.
Feeding
No dietary study of Triplophysa xichouensis has been published. Nemacheilid loaches in general, including the great majority of Triplophysa, are bottom-foraging micro-predators that pick small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and tiny crustaceans — off stream substrate, and cave-dwelling members of the genus typically rely on whatever organic material and invertebrate life washes into or lives within the cave system, since there is no light for algae or plant growth to supplement the diet. It is reasonable to assume a similar micro-predatory, opportunistic feeding style here, but this is inference from the genus rather than a documented fact for this species.
Mating
The only reproductive information available comes from the type series itself: mature males show breeding tubercles and a thickened pectoral-fin pad, features used across Nemacheilidae to grip a partner or hold position during spawning. Nothing else about courtship, spawning triggers, or seasonal timing has been documented for this species — it has never been kept or observed in captivity, and no field study of its reproductive biology exists in the available literature.
Breeding
Triplophysa xichouensis has never been bred, or even kept, in the aquarium hobby; it is not in the trade. Based on its family, the expected reproductive mode is that of a typical stone and brook loach: an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water, with no parental care afterward. Most Nemacheilidae, especially narrow-range endemics like this one, are rarely or never bred even by specialist keepers, and this species is no exception — there is simply no captive population to breed from.
In the aquarium
This species is not available in the aquarium trade and there is no record of it being kept. It is included here for completeness as a documented, valid loach species rather than as a fish anyone can realistically acquire. Were it ever to enter captivity, its cave origin would argue for cool, clean, well-oxygenated, low-light water and a scrupulously gentle approach to medication, since — like other Nemacheilidae — it is fully scaleless and would be expected to be highly sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of standard fish medicines. None of this has been tested; it is a reasonable extrapolation from its family and habitat, not a verified care regime.
Conservation
Triplophysa xichouensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; no assessment exists as of this writing. Given that it is known from a single subterranean river outlet in one county of Yunnan Province, described only in 2017, it fits the profile of many recently described Chinese cave loaches: a genuinely narrow-range, potentially fragile population about which too little is known to assign a conservation category responsibly. Any disturbance to groundwater flow, water quality, or access at its single known locality — from quarrying, agriculture, or tourism development common in karst regions of Yunnan — would be a plausible threat, but no population trend or threat assessment has been published for this species.
