Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa yajiangensis was formally described in 2015 by Yan, Sun and Guo, with the type locality given as the upper and middle Yalong River drainage, a major tributary of the Yangtze in Ganzi (Garzê) Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China. The specific epithet yajiangensis refers to that river system — the Yalong, sometimes romanised Yajiang — marking the species as a river endemic in the naming itself.
The genus Triplophysa sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Triplophysa is one of the largest and most actively studied loach genera, with dozens of described species concentrated on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and in the mountain drainages of central and southwest China and Central Asia; new species, including this one, continue to be described as remote headwater streams are surveyed. As with much of this genus, taxonomic placement should be treated as current rather than final — Nemacheilidae genera have been repeatedly revised, and Triplophysa itself absorbed material once placed in Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus.
Morphology
Detailed morphometric data specific to T. yajiangensis is not available in accessible literature, so this section describes the genus-level body plan that the species shares with its relatives. Triplophysa species are small, elongate, scaleless (or near-scaleless) loaches with a smooth, soft-skinned body, a complete lateral line running the length of the flank, and a compressed caudal peduncle built for holding position in current. The lower jaw is typically shovel-shaped for scraping food from stone and gravel surfaces, and like other cobitoids the gut is coiled into a long spiral intestine adapted to a mixed invertebrate-and-detritus diet.
Stone loaches in general — and Triplophysa specifically — lack the erectile suborbital spine that defines the botiid loaches; that spine and its associated defensive click are a Botiidae trait, not a Nemacheilidae one. Size for this species is not documented in the sources available; other small-stream Triplophysa are typically modest fish of a few centimetres, and until published measurements exist for T. yajiangensis specifically, that should be treated as an approximation rather than a confirmed figure.
Habitat
The species is known only from the upper and middle Yalong River drainage, a fast, cold, high-altitude tributary of the Yangtze flowing through Ganzi Prefecture in the mountains of western Sichuan. This places it squarely within the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau region that Triplophysa as a genus specialises in — a landscape of steep gradients, rocky and gravel-bottomed channels, and clear, fast-flowing, heavily oxygenated water fed by snowmelt and monsoon rain.
No habitat description more specific than the type locality has been located for this species, so details such as preferred depth, substrate composition, or seasonal water-level behaviour are inferred from the genus rather than confirmed for T. yajiangensis. What can be said with confidence is that this is a cool-to-cold, fast-water mountain stream fish, not a warm lowland or still-water species — a pattern consistent across nearly all Triplophysa.
Feeding
Stone loaches in the genus Triplophysa are bottom-dwelling micro-predators, taking small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other benthic prey — off the streambed, along with a share of detritus and algae scraped from stones. No feeding study specific to T. yajiangensis has been located, so this description follows the documented biology of the genus rather than direct observation of this species.
In practical terms, a fish of this type would be expected to take small live and frozen invertebrate foods and sinking preparations readily, while showing little interest in floating flake — consistent with an animal that forages by sight and touch along the substrate of a fast-flowing stream rather than in open water.
Mating
No description of courtship or spawning behaviour specific to Triplophysa yajiangensis has been published. Across the stone-and-brook-loach group generally, reproduction is not preceded by pairing or nest-building; ripe adults aggregate over suitable gravel or rocky substrate in fast-flowing water as temperatures rise through spring and summer, and spawning follows from that aggregation rather than from a fixed pair bond. Nothing in the available sources indicates any distinctive courtship display, sexual dimorphism, or breeding coloration for this species, and none should be assumed.
Breeding
As is typical for Nemacheilidae, Triplophysa yajiangensis is understood to be an egg-scatterer: eggs are released over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, most likely during a spring-to-summer spawning window as is documented for related stone loaches, with no parental care of eggs or fry afterward. This species has not been reported in the aquarium trade and there is no record of it having been bred, or even kept, in captivity.
This is honestly the state of knowledge for the great majority of Nemacheilidae species: narrow-range mountain endemics like this one are described from museum specimens collected on scientific surveys, not from live fish in circulation, and specific breeding data — spawning temperature, egg counts, incubation time — simply does not exist in the public record for T. yajiangensis.
In the aquarium
Triplophysa yajiangensis is not a fish that appears in the aquarium hobby, and there is no husbandry record to draw on. Nothing in the sources reviewed indicates that it has ever been imported, kept, or offered for sale, and no aquarium-specific care data — tank size, tankmates, filtration needs — exists to report.
If a keeper were to encounter this or a closely related undescribed Triplophysa from the same river system, the safe general guidance for the genus would apply: cool, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a hard, gravel or stone substrate, since these fish come from cold mountain streams rather than warm still water. As with most scaleless loaches, caution around copper-based and full-strength medications would be a reasonable precaution, though this too is inferred from the family rather than confirmed for this species specifically.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List assessment for Triplophysa yajiangensis has been located; the species should be treated as Not Evaluated rather than assigned an inferred status. It is known only from its type locality in the upper-middle Yalong River drainage of Sichuan, China, which — as with many narrow-range Triplophysa — means any habitat disruption in that single river system (damming, water extraction, or pollution are common pressures on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau streams) could carry disproportionate risk for a population this geographically restricted.
There is no evidence of this species entering the aquarium trade, so trade pressure is not a documented concern here; the more relevant conservation question, typical for freshly described plateau endemics, is simply how much of its range has been surveyed and how vulnerable that range is to the hydropower and water-management development occurring across many Yangtze headwater tributaries.
