Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa yaopeizhii was described in 1995 by Xu, Zhang & Cai from specimens collected in Gongjue County in the upper Jinsha River basin, Tibet Autonomous Region, with paratypes from neighbouring Jiangda County. It sits in the genus Triplophysa, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by species count the largest family of loaches, with roughly 790 described species spread across Eurasia. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name, and no alternative generic combination (such as the older, now largely retired Nemachilus or Noemacheilus) is documented for this particular species in the sources consulted here.
The species name honours Yao Peizhi, at the time vice-chairman of the Agriculture and Forestry Committee of the Tibet Autonomous Region — a dedication rather than a descriptive epithet. Triplophysa is one of the most species-rich genera on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, radiating extensively as plateau uplift isolated drainages from one another, and T. yaopeizhii is one of many narrow-range endemics produced by that process.
Morphology
As a Triplophysa, T. yaopeizhii has the build typical of high-altitude stone loaches: an elongate, cylindrical body, a well-developed caudal peduncle for holding position against current, and a somewhat enlarged mouth suited to picking food from stony or sandy substrates. Nemacheilids as a group are essentially scaleless or carry only tiny, deeply embedded scales, leaving the skin exposed — a trait that makes the family sensitive to poor water quality and to medication, though this has not been documented specifically for this species since it has no history in captivity.
