Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by Alfred William Alcock in 1898 as Nemachilus yasinensis, based on material from the Yasin River drainage in the far north of what is now Pakistan. Nemachilus (also spelled Noemacheilus in older literature) was for a long time a broad catch-all genus for Eurasian stone loaches, and many of its species — this one included — were later redistributed as the family was revised using more detailed anatomical and molecular characters.
The species is now placed in Triplophysa, one of the largest genera in the family Nemacheilidae and the dominant stone-loach genus across the Tibetan Plateau and the adjoining Himalayan and Central Asian ranges. Its current valid combination, Triplophysa yasinensis (Alcock, 1898), follows the Catalog of Fishes. As with much of this genus, older labels using Nemachilus or Noemacheilus refer to the same fish and should be read as historical synonyms rather than a different species.
Morphology
Triplophysa yasinensis is a small loach, with males recorded to about 3.5 in standard length — modest even by stone-loach standards. Like other members of its family it has an elongate, sub-cylindrical body, a ventrally flattened head suited to holding position on the streambed, and the barbels typical of nemacheilids used to feel out food on the substrate.
Detailed morphological description beyond size and general body plan is sparse in the available literature. Many Nemacheilidae, including numerous Triplophysa, carry a small erectile spine beneath the eye and have very fine, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin close to naked — a combination that, across the family, makes these fish quick to absorb medications and sensitive to copper-based treatments. Habitat
The species is known from the Yasin River drainage in Pakistan and from the Ladakh and Kashmir Valley region of India, with records also noted from China, placing it in the high-altitude watersheds of the western Himalaya and the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. FishBase describes it as a freshwater, demersal fish found in lakes and in the deeper parts of rivers, indicating a benthic animal that is not confined to shallow riffles alone.
This is cold-to-cool mountain water rather than a warm lowland stream: the drainages it comes from run off high-elevation catchments and are typically clear, fast-flowing and well-oxygenated. A precise temperature range has not been published for this species, so it should be treated as a coldwater-leaning fish from swift, clean mountain habitat rather than assumed to tolerate warm, still conditions.
Feeding
No diet study specific to Triplophysa yasinensis appears in the sources consulted, and the point should be stated plainly rather than guessed at. Based on the feeding ecology typical of small-bodied Nemacheilidae sharing its fast, clear-water habitat, it is reasonable to expect it forages along the bottom for small aquatic invertebrates such as insect larvae and micro-crustaceans, in the manner of most stone and brook loaches.

This is honestly a fish about which very little breeding information exists at all. It has not been reported as bred in captivity, and given its narrow, high-altitude native range and its absence from the aquarium trade, that is unlikely to change without dedicated fieldwork or a specialist coldwater breeding programme.

Anyone attempting to keep a fish of this profile should extrapolate cautiously from what is known of the wider genus: Triplophysa species from Himalayan and Tibetan Plateau streams are cold-to-cool water specialists that need strong flow, high oxygen saturation, a mature substrate to graze biofilm and hunt small invertebrates from, and stable, clean water rather than a warm, static community tank.
As a small, bottom-dwelling loach with the fine scalation typical of the family, standard loach caution applies if it were ever kept: go gently with medications, particularly copper-based treatments, and expect a shy, benthic fish that hides among stones rather than one that patrols open water. Given how little is documented about this species, anyone encountering it in the trade or in fieldwork should treat it as a conservation-sensitive, data-poor endemic rather than a routine community fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Triplophysa yasinensis as Least Concern in an assessment dated 29 February 2020. FishBase and GBIF distribution records show it occupying a specific set of high-altitude drainages — the Yasin River in Pakistan, the Ladakh and Kashmir Valley region of India, and localities in China — a comparatively narrow but multi-country range that has so far kept it out of a higher threat category.
As with many small-bodied Himalayan and Tibetan Plateau stream fish, the wider pressures on this kind of habitat are glacial and snowmelt hydrology changes, water abstraction, and localized pollution in valley systems that see increasing human use — pressures that can affect specialized, cold-adapted stream fish disproportionately even when a current assessment reads Least Concern. There is no evidence in the available sources of the aquarium trade playing any role in this species' conservation picture, as it is not known to be commercially collected or traded.
