Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa yunnanensis was described by Yang in 1990 and placed in the genus Triplophysa, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone and brook loaches, the largest and most species-rich family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Triplophysa is itself a huge genus, with well over a hundred described species spread across the Tibetan Plateau, the Himalaya and the karst country of southern China, and it includes a striking number of cave- and spring-restricted local endemics, of which this species is one.
The genus has absorbed a good deal of taxonomic reshuffling over the decades, as older Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus material from Central and East Asia has been redistributed among Triplophysa, Schistura, Barbatula and their relatives; the Catalog of Fishes is the current authority for which combination is valid. Triplophysa yunnanensis has remained in its original genus since description, and no synonymy or reclassification is indicated in the sources consulted here.
Morphology
Like other members of its family, Triplophysa yunnanensis is a small, elongate, bottom-dwelling loach with a maximum standard length of about 2.5 in — a genuinely small fish even by stone-loach standards. Nemacheilids typically carry the family's usual toolkit for life on the streambed: a subterminal, downturned mouth suited to picking food off rock and sediment, barbels around the mouth for tactile foraging, and a slender body built for holding position in current rather than for open-water swimming.
Related cave-dwelling Triplophysa from the same Jinsha River drainage in Yunnan show pronounced troglomorphic features — vestigial or reduced eyes, loss of body pigmentation, and translucent skin — adaptations to permanent darkness in subterranean water. Whether T. yunnanensis itself expresses the same degree of cave adaptation is not confirmed in the sources available here, and detailed morphological description beyond size and family-typical traits is data-sparse for this species specifically.
Habitat
Triplophysa yunnanensis is a narrow-range endemic restricted to Yiliang County in Yunnan Province, southwestern China, part of the Jinsha River (upper Yangtze) drainage — a region recognized as a hotspot for endemic cave-adapted Triplophysa. FishBase classifies it as a subtropical, benthopelagic freshwater species, and related Yunnan cave loaches in the same drainage are documented from subterranean river outlets with clear, year-round-stable water — the classic karst-cave habitat of southern China's limestone country.
This is cool-to-subtropical, clear, flowing water rather than the warm, still, tannin-stained water associated with many tropical loaches, and it should not be treated as a warm-tropical aquarium species by default. Feeding
