It sits in the genus Triplophysa, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone loaches — which was long treated as a subfamily of Balitoridae before molecular and morphological work elevated it to full family rank; older records, including some early taxonomic databases, still file the species under Balitoridae, but the Catalog of Fishes and current usage place it in Nemacheilidae.
Triplophysa is one of the largest loach genera in the world, with well over 180 described species, a number that keeps climbing as researchers describe more narrow-range endemics from the cave systems and headwater streams of southwestern China and the Tibetan-Himalayan region.
