Taxonomy & naming
Vanmanenia orcicampus was formally described by Maurice Kottelat in 2017, with the type locality in the Nam Ngum drainage, Plain of Jars, Xiangkhouang Province, central Laos. The species falls within the Mekong River Basin, and the genus Vanmanenia is also represented in the Red River Basin of northern Vietnam. Kottelat, the principal authority on Southeast Asian freshwater fish taxonomy and the author of countless revisionary works on the region's ichthyofauna, placed it in the family Gastromyzontidae — a reclassification of what was formerly treated as subfamily Gastromyzontinae within the broader Balitoridae. The family name Gastromyzontidae is now in general use for the hillstream loaches of Southeast Asia, though older literature and some databases still list these fish under Balitoridae.
The genus Vanmanenia contains 19 valid species at present, distributed across southern China, northern Vietnam, and Laos. Three species — V. crassicauda, V. caobangensis, and V. orcicampus — are restricted to the Red River and Mekong drainages of the Laos–Vietnam border region. The species was described in 2017 and has not yet been assessed by the IUCN Red List. The name Vanmanenia orcucampus is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Vanmanenia orcicampus is a small, dorsoventrally flattened loach with a body plan shaped entirely by life in fast water. Like its congeners and other gastromyzontid hillstream loaches, its ventral surface is broad and flattened, and its paired pectoral and pelvic fins are expanded into an adhesive platform that allows the fish to cling to smooth rock surfaces in rapid current — a body form that functions as a biological sucker or holdfast rather than a conventional fish outline.
The species is distinguished by a specific colour pattern: a midlateral row of six dark blotches runs the length of the flank, and a middorsal row of six saddles crosses the back, with additional vermiculations (worm-like wavy markings) on the flanks between these elements. The caudal peduncle is notably slender, with a depth approximately 1.5 times its length and 2.5 times the body depth — a proportional slenderness that distinguishes it from related species. It carries 12 to 14 branched pectoral-fin rays. The body is effectively scaleless, or near so, in the manner characteristic of the group, which has implications for medication sensitivity in captivity.
Habitat
This species is a native of hill and mountain streams in the Mekong Basin of central Laos, specifically the Nam Ngum drainage centred on the Plain of Jars in Xiangkhouang Province. Its natural habitat is fast-flowing, clear, highly oxygenated fresh water running over rock and gravel substrates in hilly terrain — the torrent environment that the entire gastromyzontid family is built to exploit.
The water in these streams is cool by tropical standards, running over rock with little dissolved organic load and high dissolved oxygen content. The genus Vanmanenia as a whole is characterised as a cool-water specialist adapted to strongly running water; the species would not naturally encounter the warm, still, nutrient-rich conditions of lowland river systems or standing water. Current is not merely preferred but physiologically necessary: the gills of these fish are adapted to extract oxygen from fast, turbulent water, and still or poorly oxygenated conditions are quickly lethal.
Feeding
Vanmanenia orcicampus is an aufwuchs grazer — it rasps biofilm, diatoms, and algae from the surface of rocks in fast-flowing water, supplementing this with the small invertebrates and organic particles trapped within the biofilm mat. This feeding mode is inseparable from the habitat: the fish requires a mature, biofilm-coated rockscape in strongly flowing, well-oxygenated water to find food. In a bare or newly established aquarium there is simply nothing for it to eat in the normal course of grazing, and it will starve even if offered other foods that it does not readily recognise or access.
In captivity, hillstream loaches of this type can be maintained on a combination of mature algae- and biofilm-covered rocks (the primary food source), blanched green vegetables such as courgette or spinach, and small frozen foods such as daphnia or micro-worm offered after the lights go down. Commercial algae wafers and spirulina-based sinking wafers may be accepted in time, but the fish's welfare depends first and foremost on having a genuinely mature, biologically active setup rather than supplementary feeding alone.
Mating
No specific information on the mating behaviour of Vanmanenia orcicampus is available; the species was described only in 2017 and has essentially no recorded captive history. Based on what is known of the genus and the broader gastromyzontid family, reproductive behaviour follows the general hillstream loach pattern: spawning takes place in fast-flowing, oxygenated water associated with rock and gravel substrates, and is likely triggered by seasonal changes in water level, flow, and temperature that accompany monsoon and wet-season conditions in the species' native Mekong drainage.
Sexual dimorphism in Vanmanenia, as in most hillstream loaches, is not conspicuous. Ripe females may appear broader-bodied when gravid, but reliably distinguishing the sexes from external characters alone is generally not possible. The few gastromyzontid genera in which aquarium spawning has been documented — notably Sewellia — have required a strongly flowing, mature river-tank setup to induce any reproductive behaviour.
Breeding
Vanmanenia orcicampus has not been bred in the aquarium to any documented extent. It is an egg-scattering species with no parental care, in the manner of hillstream loaches generally: eggs are deposited among stones and gravel in fast-flowing water and are left by the adults without further attendance. The larvae in nature would presumably drift in the current or shelter in substrate interstices until free-swimming.
A handful of hillstream loach species — most notably Sewellia lineolata — have been induced to spawn in well-established, strongly flowing river-tank setups, producing eggs among stones with no parental care. Whether Vanmanenia orcicampus could similarly be spawned under optimal conditions is unknown, but the prerequisites would include a mature, high-flow aquarium with a biofilm-covered rockscape, cool and highly oxygenated water, and a seasonal stimulus. Given the species' narrow range, recent description, and absence from the trade, there is no practical captive-breeding record to draw upon. Prospective keepers should approach it as a fish that is not expected to breed.
In the aquarium
Vanmanenia orcicampus has no established presence in the aquarium hobby. It was described in 2017 from a narrow geographic range in Laos and is noted as rare in hobby aquaculture; it is effectively absent from the trade, and any specimens that appeared would most likely be wild-collected. Keepers who did acquire this species would need to provide the full hillstream loach setup: a tank with very strong water flow produced by powerheads or a river-manifold arrangement, cool and highly oxygenated water in the range typical for Vanmanenia (cool, clear mountain-stream conditions — not warm tropical temperatures), and a mature rockscape with an established coating of algae and biofilm. The tank should be running for several months before the fish are introduced, as the biofilm layer that forms the basis of their diet cannot be established quickly.
The near-scaleless skin characteristic of gastromyzontid loaches makes Vanmanenia orcicampus, like its relatives, sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many proprietary treatments. Any disease should be treated cautiously, using copper-free products and reduced doses where possible, with close observation. Stable water quality and strong oxygenation are the cornerstones of care; any significant drop in flow or oxygen saturation is quickly stressful or fatal. Tank companions, if kept at all, should be other rheophilic species with compatible flow and temperature requirements.
Conservation
Vanmanenia orcicampus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries the informal status of Not Evaluated. Its known distribution is narrow — the Nam Ngum drainage of the Plain of Jars in Xiangkhouang Province, central Laos — and it was described only in 2017, leaving limited data on its abundance, population structure, or the extent of any threats.
As an endemic of a specific highland drainage in a country with growing pressures on freshwater habitats from hydropower development, agricultural runoff, and deforestation, the species is potentially vulnerable to the degradation of its cool, fast-flowing stream habitat. The Mekong Basin and its highland tributaries in Laos face significant modification from dam construction and land-use change, which can alter the flow regimes, temperature, and sediment loads of mountain streams — the precise conditions on which torrent-specialist gastromyzontids depend. No targeted conservation measures for this species are known, and any trade in wild specimens should be approached with caution given the species' restricted range and absence of population data.
