Yasuhikotakia lecontei, Le Conte's Loach, is a mid-sized botiid from the flowing rivers of the Mekong and Chao Phraya drainages — Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. It grows to around 7 in in the aquarium, carries the family's distinctive erectile suborbital spine, and shares the botiid requirement for group living that so many buyers overlook. Like all Yasuhikotakia it is a near-scaleless, benthic invertebrate feeder most active after dusk, and it has not been bred in the home aquarium; the fish in the trade are wild-collected from its native river systems. Given a proper shoal of five or more, warm clean water and a sand substrate, it proves a characterful and long-lived loach for the serious community tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Yasuhikotakia lecontei was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1937, originally placed in the broad genus Botia — hence the parentheses around his name in the current combination. For most of the twentieth century it was listed as Botia lecontei and kept company with the yoyo, skunk and zebra loaches under that catch-all name.

The genus Yasuhikotakia was erected by Kottelat & Freyhof in 2004 during a major revision of the botiid loaches, separating several Indochinese species from Botia on morphological and biogeographic grounds. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current valid name as Yasuhikotakia lecontei. It belongs to the family Botiidae, the botiid loaches, a group spread across South and Southeast Asia that also includes Botia, Chromobotia, Syncrossus, Ambastaia and Sinibotia.

The specific epithet lecontei honours Le Conte, though the identity of the individual intended by Fowler is not firmly established in the literature. Trade names such as "Silver Loach" are descriptive of the fish's relatively plain silver-and-black body — modest in colour compared to clown or zebra loaches but useful for distinguishing it from the more boldly patterned congeners.

Morphology

Le Conte's Loach is a moderately elongate botiid with a gently arched back and a subtly pointed snout typical of the genus. The body is largely silver to pale olive-grey, usually marked with a variable dark lateral stripe or chain of blotches running from the head to the caudal peduncle; the fins are generally clear to faintly yellowish. It is not among the more flamboyantly coloured loaches, but its clean, streamlined silhouette has a quiet elegance.

As in all botiids, a sharp erectile spine sits in a groove beneath each eye — the suborbital spine that gives the family one of its older names. The fish can flick these spines outward defensively; they snag nets readily and can draw blood from an unguarded hand, so transfers are best made with a container rather than mesh. The body is covered in minute, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin effectively naked to the touch, a feature shared across the botiids that has direct consequences for how the fish responds to disease and medication.

Maximum size in the wild is reported up to about 10 in, though aquarium specimens more typically reach 6–7 in. FishBase records a maximum of 6 in SL; Loaches Online reports wild individuals to 10 in with aquarium fish generally settling around 7 in. The disparity likely reflects geography and age rather than error.

Habitat

Yasuhikotakia lecontei is native to the Mekong and Chao Phraya river basins of mainland Southeast Asia, with confirmed records from Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. It inhabits medium to fast-flowing rivers and larger tributaries, generally in the lowland and foothill zones, over substrates of sand, gravel and smooth rock with scattered wood and debris.

The water is warm and clean, with moderate oxygen levels maintained by the current. FishBase records temperature preferences of 75–82 °F and a pH of 6.0–6.5; Loaches Online extends this to 79–86 °F and pH 6.5–7.5, reflecting variation across its range. The species is a benthic fish that shelters in crevices, root tangles and debris piles by day and forages more actively at dawn, dusk and after dark. It is a strictly freshwater species — not brackish-tolerant — and its river habitat is fundamentally different from the still, warm, tannin-stained blackwater associated with Sundaland species like the clown loach.

Feeding

Le Conte's Loach is an omnivore with a strong bias toward small benthic invertebrates. In the wild it forages over the riverbed for worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and molluscs, supplementing this with detritus and plant matter when opportunities arise. Its appetite for snails is genuine and useful: a shoal will work methodically through a tank's pest-snail population.

In the aquarium it is not fussy and accepts a broad diet. Quality sinking pellets and algae wafers form a practical base; frozen foods such as bloodworm and Mysis shrimp are taken eagerly, as are live earthworms. It is partly crepuscular and nocturnal, so a feed after lights-out ensures every fish in the hierarchy gets its share. Lower-ranking individuals in a shoal can be out-competed at the surface or in bright conditions, so bottom-sinking foods and dim or dimming light at feeding time are good management. A varied, high-quality diet sustains colour, condition and the immune function this thin-skinned family depends upon.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Yasuhikotakia lecontei is not well documented and is presumed to be slight, as in most botiids. Mature females may appear plumper across the belly when gravid, but distinguishing the sexes with confidence in a dealer's tank is not reliably possible. The fish reach sexual maturity at a size and age that is rarely achieved in an ordinary community aquarium.

In the wild, spawning is inferred to follow the pattern established across the botiid loaches of mainland Southeast Asia: adults undertake upstream or lateral breeding migrations as rivers rise with the monsoon, moving into shallower, faster water to scatter eggs. The specific cues — changes in water level, temperature, current and chemistry — that trigger ripening and migration are not reliably reproducible in an enclosed home aquarium, which is the fundamental barrier to captive breeding.

Breeding

Yasuhikotakia lecontei is not bred in the home aquarium. It is an egg-scattering species with no parental care: ripe adults release eggs into flowing water, the eggs and larvae drift downstream or settle among substrate, and neither parent takes any further part. No verified captive spawnings appear in the hobbyist literature, and Loaches Online confirms that this species is not bred in aquaria.

The commercial supply is sourced from wild-caught fish collected in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. Unlike the clown loach, which is produced at scale via hormone induction on Southeast-Asian farms, Le Conte's Loach is generally a wild-harvest product. A keeper should acquire it expecting to provide excellent long-term care rather than a breeding project; it is a fish for the dedicated community tank, not a spawning aquarium.

In the aquarium

The most important thing to understand about Le Conte's Loach is that it is obligate-social. Kept singly or in pairs it becomes stressed, withdrawn and prone to skittish or aggressive behaviour; kept in a proper group of five or more it settles into a coherent hierarchy, forages openly and behaves as nature intended. A group of six to eight in a well-appointed tank is the minimum aim; more is better. Within the group a linear dominance hierarchy develops, with the alpha individual displacing subordinates at favoured resting spots, though Loaches Online notes it is slightly less territorial than some congeners such as Yasuhikotakia modesta.

Being near-scaleless, Le Conte's Loach is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many treatments — yet it is, like most botiids, often among the first fish in a tank to display ich. The prudent approach is to treat at half-dose using a product without copper, and to watch the shoal closely at the first sign of an outbreak. Excellent filtration and a fine sand substrate (to protect the barbels) are non-negotiable. Water should be warm — 75–86 °F — clean and well-oxygenated with moderate flow. A 150-litre or larger tank suits a shoal of five to six; more volume is needed if the fish approach their maximum size. Provide plenty of cover in the form of smooth wood, root tangles and low-light refuges. Feed generously after lights-out so every member of the hierarchy eats.

Conservation

Yasuhikotakia lecontei is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2011 assessment), reflecting a widespread distribution across multiple major drainages — the Mekong and Chao Phraya — and no documented evidence of a significant population decline. Its range spans four countries (Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam), which provides some buffer against localised threats.

The species is collected from the wild for the aquarium trade, and there is no large-scale captive breeding operation supplying the market. Collection pressure combined with the broader habitat threats facing the lower Mekong — dam construction, sand-mining, seasonal flow disruption and water quality degradation — are the relevant risks for a riverine species tied to flowing water. The Least Concern status does not preclude future reassessment as monitoring improves. Responsible purchase of captive-bred fish, where available, is always preferable; for this species, buyers should be aware that their fish likely came from a river in mainland Southeast Asia.
