Taxonomy & naming
Yasuhikotakia splendida was described by the American ichthyologist Tyson Roberts in 1995 in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology (volume 43, pages 463–467), where it was placed in the broad genus Botia under the combination Botia splendida. The parentheses around Roberts's name in the current authority string signal that the original genus has since changed.
The genus Botia, long used as a catch-all for botiid loaches across South and Southeast Asia, was progressively dismembered in the 2000s as anatomical and molecular work revealed that the old arrangement was not a natural group. Kottelat (2004) and subsequent authors segregated several lineages into new genera; the species now placed in Yasuhikotakia — among them the popular blue botia (Y. modesta), the red-tail botia (Y. udomritthiruji), and the eel loach (Y. longidorsalis) — share features that unite them as a coherent group distinct from the true Botia of India. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority governing valid names, and it currently lists this species as Yasuhikotakia splendida. The old combination Botia splendida persists in older references and some trade catalogues.
Yasuhikotakia splendida belongs to the family Botiidae, the botiid loaches, within the superfamily Cobitoidea. It should not be confused with the superficially similar Yasuhikotakia modesta, which shares parts of the wider Mekong region; the two species differ in colour pattern, maximum size, and distributional detail.
Morphology
The splendid loach is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed loach with the typical botiid profile: a gently arched back, a subterminal mouth with fleshy lips and multiple pairs of barbels adapted for probing substrates, and a pointed snout. Adults reach around 3.5–4 in in standard length, making this a mid-sized member of the genus. The specific epithet splendida refers to its striking coloration — the fish is notably attractive for the genus, with a warm body colour overlaid by a pattern of darker blotches or bars that sets it apart from its congeners.
Like all botiids, Yasuhikotakia splendida carries an erectile spine lodged in a groove beneath each eye — the suborbital spine that characterises the family. This spine can be flicked outward when the fish is stressed, threatened or handled; it snags nets readily and can scratch a careless hand, so the species is best moved in a container rather than scooped in mesh. The body is covered in minute, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin effectively naked to the touch — a defining feature with important consequences for medication sensitivity and disease susceptibility.
Habitat
Yasuhikotakia splendida is native to the Xe Pian river system and its tributaries within the Xe Khong drainage of the greater Mekong basin, restricted to Champasak and Attapeu provinces in southern Laos. The type locality is the headwater streams draining the foothills of the Bolaven Plateau — a region of upland basalt that produces cool, clear, oxygen-rich runoff with a rocky or cobble bed.
In these streams the fish occupies swiftly-running clearwater reaches where strong current, high dissolved oxygen, and minimal silt distinguish the habitat from the lowland rivers where many other Southeast Asian loaches are found. The water is soft to moderately hard and nearly neutral (pH 6.0–7.5), with temperatures that can dip toward 68 °F in the upland dry season and rise to around 82–86 °F during warmer months. This is not a still-water or pond species: it is a river fish adapted to fast flow and high oxygen, and it will decline in a warm, sluggish aquarium.
The restricted distribution — a handful of tributary systems in two provinces — makes the species naturally uncommon and potentially vulnerable to local disturbances. It does not occur elsewhere in the Mekong basin or beyond.
Feeding
Yasuhikotakia splendida is an omnivore with a strong bias toward small invertebrates, consistent with the diet of most botiid loaches in fast rocky streams. In the wild it forages over cobble and gravel beds for insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and any molluscs it encounters. Like its relatives it is capable of crushing snail shells with its pharyngeal teeth, and a group will make short work of a tank's pest-snail population — a genuinely useful role in the aquarium.
In the aquarium it is a greedy and eager feeder that accepts a wide range of foods: quality sinking pellets, algae wafers, earthworms, frozen bloodworm, mysid and brine shrimp, and small pieces of prawn or cocktail shrimp. Dried flake is accepted but is not ideal as a staple for a bottom-dweller of this build. Both Loaches Online and SeriouslyFish note the species' strong appetite and recommend measured feeding to prevent overfeeding. Because it hunts partly after dark, offering part of the daily ration after lights-out suits its partly nocturnal foraging habit and ensures that subordinate fish in the group get their share.
Mating
Sexing Yasuhikotakia splendida in normal aquarium conditions is difficult, as it is for most botiid loaches. SeriouslyFish reports that females in breeding condition are noticeably fatter and — unusually among loaches — reportedly more brightly coloured than males, which is the reverse of the dimorphism seen in many vertebrates. This observation comes from a single well-documented account of captive spawning by Mark Duffill, who described gravid females shimmying with males in the period immediately before eggs were released, behaviour consistent with botiid courtship as seen in better-studied species.
In the wild, breeding almost certainly follows the seasonal flood cycle typical of Mekong basin botiids: rising water levels in the monsoon season trigger migrations into shallower, faster-flowing tributary reaches where spawning occurs. Replicating the hydrological and thermal cues of a Bolaven Plateau monsoon — the combination of increased flow, falling then rising temperature, and shifting water chemistry — is beyond the reach of an ordinary home tank, which is why verified spawnings are essentially unknown for this species.
Breeding
Yasuhikotakia splendida is an egg-scatterer with no parental care — the standard botiid reproductive mode. Ripe adults release eggs into flowing water and take no further part in their development. There is a single documented account of successful spawning in captivity: a group of 15 adults kept together produced eggs and free-swimming fry, as reported by Mark Duffill via SeriouslyFish. This remains an exceptional occurrence rather than a reproducible aquarium achievement; Loaches Online states plainly that the species is not bred in aquaria under normal circumstances.
The commercial supply of Yasuhikotakia splendida, where available in the trade, comes from wild collection in Laos, not from hormone-induced farm production of the kind that supplies clown loaches and a few other popular botiids at commercial scale. A keeper acquiring this fish should expect to maintain it for its own merits — its active social behaviour, striking colour, and personality — rather than with any realistic prospect of breeding it.
In the aquarium
The splendid loach is a rewarding but demanding fish with three non-negotiable requirements. The first is social: it is obligate-social and must be kept in a group of at least five individuals. Loaches Online describes it as territorial and probably aggressive when inadequately grouped; subordinate fish need numerous caves, overhangs, and rock-pile retreats to escape dominant individuals. A well-structured aquascape with stacked cobbles, bogwood, and clay pipes provides the hierarchy enough space to establish itself without constant stress on lower-ranking fish.
The second requirement is water quality and flow. This is a headwater stream fish accustomed to clear, well-oxygenated, swiftly-moving water at the cooler end of the tropical spectrum (68–82 °F). A canister filter with a spray-bar return or a powerhead creating surface agitation is appropriate; stagnant or poorly oxygenated water, especially combined with temperatures above 82 °F, will cause rapid decline. The pH target of 6.0–7.5 is forgiving, but soft, clean water with moderate hardness (up to about 12 dH) matches the source streams well.
The third requirement is medication caution. Being near-scaleless, the splendid loach absorbs treatments readily and is sensitive to copper and to full therapeutic doses of many aquarium medicines — yet it is, like most botiids, prone to ich and often one of the first fish in a tank to show white spots. Half-dose treatments with copper-free, loach-safe products are the rule; remove activated carbon before medicating. Suitable tankmates are other boisterous, moderately large active fish; small, slow or delicate companions will be harassed, and any snails kept as display livestock will be eaten.
Conservation
Yasuhikotakia splendida is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, aligning with the Vulnerable (VU, under criteria A2c+3c) rating FishBase has carried since a 2011 assessment that cited threats from pollution, dam construction, and habitat degradation across the Mekong river basin.
The restricted endemic range — the Xe Pian tributaries in just two provinces of southern Laos — makes the species naturally susceptible to local impacts. The Mekong basin and its highland tributaries have seen significant pressure from hydropower development, and the clear headwater streams of the Bolaven Plateau lie within a region of active land-use change and agricultural expansion. Collection for the aquarium trade is an additional factor: unlike the clown loach and a handful of other popular botiids produced at scale on Southeast-Asian farms via hormone induction, the supply of Yasuhikotakia splendida depends on wild-caught fish from a narrow range. Conservation of the clearwater stream habitats of southern Laos is central to the long-term security of this species.
