Taxonomy & naming
Yasuhikotakia morleti was described by the French ichthyologist Gabriel Tirant in 1885, originally placed in the broad genus Botia — the parentheses around the authority name signal that the original combination has since changed. For most of the twentieth century it was known in both the scientific literature and the hobby as Botia morleti, sometimes also traded under the names Botia horae or Botia lecontei (the latter now recognised as a distinct species, Y. lecontei).
In 2004 Maurice Kottelat revised the botiid loaches and erected the genus Yasuhikotakia to receive a cluster of mid-sized Southeast Asian species previously lumped in Botia. Y. morleti, Y. lecontei, Y. modesta (the red-finned loach) and their close relatives were transferred to this new genus, and the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names in ichthyology — accepts Yasuhikotakia morleti as the current valid combination. The genus name honours ichthyologist Yusuke Yasuhiko; the epithet morleti refers to J.-B. Morlet, a French naturalist who collected in Indochina in the nineteenth century.
The species belongs to the family Botiidae, subfamily Botiinae, the group that also contains Chromobotia (clown loach), Botia (yoyo and zebra loaches), Syncrossus (tiger loaches) and Sinibotia. References to "Botia morleti" in older hobby literature and many retail listings refer to this same fish.
Morphology
Y. morleti is a moderately slender botiid, somewhat more elongate than the deep-bodied clown loach, with a pointed snout, subterminal mouth equipped with sensitive barbels for locating prey, and a distinctly arched back. The body colour is pale cream to yellowish-white, giving rise to the trade name "cream loach," and the most distinctive marking is a single dark lateral stripe — the "skunk stripe" — running from the snout or eye along the midline to the base of the tail. The fins are generally clear or faintly pigmented. Maximum reported standard length is around 4 in, making it one of the smaller botiid species regularly kept in the hobby.
Like all members of Botiidae, Y. morleti carries a bifurcate, erectile suborbital spine seated in a groove below each eye. These spines can be flicked outward as a defence against predators; they readily snag netting material and can inflict a painful prick on an unguarded hand, so the fish is best moved in a smooth-sided container rather than lifted in a net. The skin is effectively near-scaleless — scales are tiny and deeply embedded — which gives the body a smooth appearance but leaves it with reduced protection against pathogens and chemical agents.
Habitat
The skunk loach is native to river systems across the Indian subcontinent and mainland Southeast Asia, with records from the Indus basin in Pakistan, India, and Indochina including the Mekong drainage. FishBase places the type locality in the context of warm subtropical to tropical stream environments. These are clean, well-oxygenated rivers and tributaries with moderate current, typically running over substrates of sand, gravel and submerged leaf litter, often with structured banks and aquatic vegetation.
Water conditions in its native range are warm — around 72–79 °F — and range from mildly acidic to near-neutral. These are freshwater environments without meaningful salinity. The species is a lowland and foothill river fish rather than a high-altitude coldwater dweller, though the lower end of its temperature range (72 °F) is somewhat cooler than many purely tropical loaches, reflecting its distribution across both subtropical Pakistan and tropical Indochina.
Feeding
Y. morleti is an omnivore with a pronounced appetite for small invertebrates, and it is this appetite that makes it genuinely useful in the planted aquarium. In the wild it forages along the bottom, using its sensitive barbels to locate snails, worms, insect larvae and small crustaceans; it takes detritus and some plant matter as well. Its enthusiasm for snails is real and practical — a group of skunk loaches will steadily work through a population of pest snails, crushing their shells with pharyngeal teeth.
In the aquarium it adapts readily to prepared foods. Sinking pellets and wafers should form the staple, supplemented with frozen and live foods — bloodworm, tubifex, brine shrimp and similar invertebrate-based items keep it in good condition and colour. Because it is partly nocturnal, a feeding after lights-out ensures that shyer or lower-ranking individuals in the group secure their share. Vegetable matter and algae wafers round out a varied diet. Like most loaches, it is not a flake-surface feeder and appreciates food that reaches the bottom quickly.
Mating
Sexual dimorphism in Y. morleti is limited and unreliable. Ripe females may appear somewhat plumper in the body than males of similar age, but the difference is subtle and inconsistent, and distinguishing the sexes from external appearance alone is difficult under normal aquarium conditions. As with other botiids, the combination of similar-looking sexes and the strong seasonal triggers required for reproduction means that pairing and conditioning a spawning group at home is rarely achieved.
In its native rivers, spawning is linked to seasonal flood pulses and monsoon rains that change water temperature, volume, chemistry and flow rate. These environmental cues trigger ripening and, likely, short migrations into productive breeding habitat. Replicating the full suite of these cues in an aquarium is impractical, which explains the near-complete absence of verified home spawnings on record.
Breeding
Y. morleti is an egg-scatterer with no parental care. Ripe fish release eggs into the water column or substrate, the eggs and emerging larvae receive no further attention from either parent, and the adults take no guarding or brooding role — botiids are not cave-spawners or mouthbrooders. Verified spawning in the home aquarium is essentially unreported; the obstacles are the same ones that prevent home breeding across the botiid family: large adult size relative to most tanks, the need for strong seasonal conditioning cues, difficulty in sexing, and the absence of the migratory flow changes that trigger reproduction in the wild.
Commercial production of Y. morleti for the trade, where it occurs, relies on hormone-induced spawning on Southeast Asian fish farms rather than on voluntary aquarium spawning. Keepers should regard breeding as an unlikely outcome and focus instead on providing the conditions — group housing, clean water, varied diet — that allow the fish to thrive over its natural lifespan.
In the aquarium
The skunk loach is an active, personable fish that rewards keeping correctly but is commonly purchased without understanding its social needs. It is obligate-social: a single Y. morleti is a withdrawn, skittish or potentially aggressive fish, directing its frustration at tankmates. A group of five or more individuals allows the species to establish its own natural hierarchy, and a settled group "clicks" audibly — a sound produced with the pharyngeal teeth that signals comfort and activity. A minimum tank of around 20–25 US gal is appropriate for a small group, with more space welcome as the group grows.
The near-scaleless skin that makes Y. morleti such an effective snail predator also makes it one of the most medication-sensitive fish in a community tank. It absorbs copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many common remedies far more readily than scaled fish; half-doses and copper-free formulations are the safest route when treatment is necessary. At the same time, loaches are frequently among the first fish to develop ich outbreaks in a tank, so the keeper must watch carefully and act promptly but gently. Sand or fine-grained substrate protects the barbels; abundant cover in the form of caves, driftwood and plants gives a shoal the retreats it needs. The species coexists well with other peaceful loaches and medium-sized community fish that are not small enough to be regarded as prey.
Conservation
Y. morleti is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, reflecting a wide native distribution across South and Southeast Asia — from the Indus system in Pakistan through India to the rivers of Indochina — without evidence of a range-wide population decline. This broad distribution, spanning multiple large river systems, means it is not considered globally threatened at present.
The species enters the ornamental fish trade and is collected from the wild in parts of its range. As with most freshwater fishes from South and Southeast Asia, the longer-term risks are habitat-driven — river degradation, agricultural runoff, and drainage alteration across its range — rather than any documented collapse attributable specifically to the aquarium trade. No targeted conservation measures are currently in place, but the Least Concern assessment indicates the species is not presently in need of intervention under current conditions.
