Taxonomy & naming
Apareiodon ibitiensis was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Adão José do Amaral Campos in 1944, based on material that became the holotype held at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP 3411), with a type locality at the Rio Camanducaia, Monte Alegre, São Paulo State, Brazil. It belongs to the family Parodontidae — the "toothed headstanders" or parodontids, a small Neotropical family of algae-grazing characiforms — rather than to Serrasalmidae or Characidae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) lists it as a valid species in the genus Apareiodon; older literature and some databases spell the genus "Apareidon," a variant that refers to the same taxon.
A cytogenetic study by Bellafronte et al. (2009, Journal of Fish Biology) examined the species' chromosomes and confirmed a ZZ/ZW sex-determination system — the female carrying the heterogametic ZW pair — a genetically notable feature not shared by most characiforms and one of the few points of detailed biological study this species has received. That paper also corroborates the species' distribution across the São Francisco and upper Paraná basins.
Morphology
Apareiodon ibitiensis follows the parodontid body plan: a slender, subcylindrical form with a subterminal, ventrally set mouth built for scraping surfaces rather than seizing prey, and well-developed pectoral fins that the species uses to grip the substrate while grazing and lunging at algae in current. FishBase records a maximum published size of 4.5 in standard length, making this one of the smaller species in the genus and this atlas section.
