Leporinus lacustris was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Lauro Travassos do Amaral Campos in 1945. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family whose genus-level boundaries the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) continues to treat as the reference for valid names; Leporinus itself has historically been a large, taxonomically fluid genus, and species once placed in it have periodically been moved to segregate genera such as Hypomasticus or Megaleporinus as revisions have proceeded, so a given source may still carry an older combination.
The genus name Leporinus is Latin for "hare-like," a reference to the two prominent, forward-pointing incisor-like teeth in the upper jaw that recall a rabbit's front teeth — the same dentition, well suited to scraping algae and plant material from surfaces, that gives the genus its common grazing habit. The species epithet lacustris is Latin for "of lakes," fitting a fish first characterized from the lagoons and lake-like backwaters of the upper Paraná floodplain rather than the main river channel.
Morphology
Leporinus lacustris has the elongated, moderately compressed body typical of the genus, with a small, blunt head and a terminal mouth armed with the chisel-like incisors used for grazing. FishBase records a maximum published size of 9.5 in total length for males and unsexed individuals, with a more typical common length around 5 in standard length — a modest, manageable size compared with some of the larger Leporinus and Anostomus species that are notorious for outgrowing home aquaria.
Colouration follows the genus's classic pattern of alternating pale and dark bands or blotches along the flanks, which in this species and its relatives serves as useful field identification, though exact banding can vary somewhat with individual condition and locality. As in most headstanders, the fins are unremarkable in shape and colour compared with the strongly patterned body, and the paired fins are positioned to help stabilise the fish in its characteristic oblique, head-down feeding posture.
Habitat
This species is native to the upper Paraná River basin of South America, and the primary published biological account of its life history — a reproductive-biology study in Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia — records it specifically from floodplain lagoons of the Baía River system: Fechada, Guaraná, Patos, Garças, Ventura and Ressaco do Pau Véio. These are the shallow, vegetated, seasonally connected backwaters typical of large Neotropical floodplains, where water levels and connectivity to the main river channel shift with the annual flood pulse.
FishBase gives a temperature range of 72–81 °F and a pH range of 5.8–7.8 for the species, indicating tolerance of mildly acidic to mildly alkaline water rather than the extreme soft blackwater conditions associated with some other Amazonian characins — consistent with a floodplain-lagoon existence in the subtropical upper Paraná, a system that runs cooler on average than the equatorial Amazon proper. No reliable external sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species in the sources available; as in many characins of this kind, ripe females are likely to appear fuller-bodied when in spawning condition, but there is no confirmed colour or fin difference between the sexes, and pairing behaviour rather than appearance is the practical way breeders would identify a compatible pair.
Breeding
Leporinus lacustris is a batch-spawning egg-scatterer, consistent with the pattern seen across headstanders generally: a pair releases eggs into dense vegetation in a lagoon or backwater rather than building or defending a fixed nest, and there is no evidence of parental care after spawning. Hobby accounts of Leporinus behaviour in general describe the genus as semi-aggressive fin-nippers whose territoriality increases with maturity, active swimmers with sharp, chisel-like teeth well suited to nipping as well as grazing; this species should be housed with that reputation in mind, ideally in a spacious, well-planted (with tough, unpalatable plants or hardscape rather than delicate leaves) tank with robust tankmates too large or too fast to be easy nipping targets.

Because grazing headstanders will pick at soft aquatic plants, keepers who want a heavily planted display should expect some browsing damage and choose hardier species accordingly.
