Taxonomy & naming
Brycon nattereri was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1864, part of his prolific nineteenth-century work cataloguing the fish collections of the British Museum. The epithet honours the Austrian naturalist Johann Natterer, who collected extensively across Brazil in the early nineteenth century and whose specimens underpin the descriptions of many Neotropical fish from that era — the same collector honoured in the piranha Pygocentrus nattereri.
The species belongs to Bryconidae, a family that was carved out of the old, broadly defined Characidae as characin systematics were revised; Brycon itself is a large genus of robust, often silvery river characins sometimes called "river tetras" or "jatuaranas" in the trade, distinct from the true piranhas and pacus of Serrasalmidae despite superficial resemblance in body depth. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid combination Brycon nattereri; no recent generic reassignment is documented in the cache for this species, and it remains firmly within Brycon.
