Apareiodon piracicabae was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1907, with the species epithet referencing the Piracicaba River, a tributary of the Tietê in the Upper Paraná basin of São Paulo state, Brazil, where the species was first collected. It belongs to the genus Apareiodon in the family Parodontidae — a small family of Neotropical characiform "scrapetooth" fishes, distinct from the much larger and better-known Serrasalmidae (piranhas, pacus, silver dollars) that make up most of this group.
Parodontids as a whole are defined by a distinctive rasping dentition adapted for grazing algae and biofilm from hard surfaces, a very different feeding architecture from the cutting or crushing teeth of piranhas and pacus.
