Taxonomy & naming
Brycon coxeyi was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1943, based on type material measuring 5 in standard length collected at Hacienda La Mascota on the Río Topo, in the upper Río Pastaza basin of Ecuador (recorded at approximately 1°25'S, 78°11'W). It sits in the genus Brycon, within the family Bryconidae — the jaw characins or "dorados," a Neotropical group historically lumped into Characidae but now recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) as its own family, distinguished from the piranhas and pacus of Serrasalmidae by a more elongate, streamlined body and a single row of strong, close-set teeth built for grasping rather than shearing.
As with many regional Brycon, B. coxeyi is known chiefly from a limited series of preserved specimens rather than from extensive field study, and its status has not been revisited in a targeted taxonomic review since Fowler's original description; museum-examined specimens have ranged from roughly 4.5–7 in standard length. The genus Brycon as a whole is taxonomically complex, with numerous nominal species described from single river systems across Central and South America, and some older literature groups species like this one loosely under regional "Brycon sp." accounts. This article keeps the genus and species as Brycon coxeyi per Fowler's description; it does not attempt a name change.
Morphology
Brycon coxeyi has the classic bryconid build: a moderately deep but streamlined, laterally compressed body, a terminal mouth armed with a single row of close-set, pointed teeth, and a deeply forked tail suited to fast, sustained swimming in flowing water — the same basic toolkit that makes larger Brycon species capable long-distance migrators and strong-fighting game fish. Compared with those larger congeners, however, B. coxeyi is a small species: the type specimen measured 5 in SL, and examined material has topped out around 7 in SL (roughly 7 in), well short of the 30–70+ cm many other Brycon species reach as adults.
Detailed colour-pattern and fin-count descriptions beyond the original 1943 species account are not well documented in accessible literature; like most Brycon, it likely shows the family's typical silvery flanks with a darker mid-lateral stripe and dusky caudal-fin margins, but this has not been independently confirmed for this species and should be treated as a reasonable inference rather than a documented fact.
Habitat
The species is known from the Río Marañón drainage of Ecuador and Peru, with its type locality on the Río Topo, a tributary in the upper Río Pastaza basin — itself part of the wider Amazon headwater system draining the eastern Andean foothills. This places B. coxeyi in fast-flowing, cool-to-mild montane and piedmont tributary habitat rather than the warm Amazonian lowland floodplains associated with better-known Brycon such as B. cephalus or B. amazonicus.
No specific published data on temperature, pH or hardness for this species' native waters could be located in the sources consulted; Andean piedmont streams in this region are generally clearer and cooler than lowland Amazon whitewater, but that inference should not be treated as a substitute for measured data. What can be said, by extension from its genus, is a caution rather than a care sheet: Brycon are fast, active, strong-swimming characins that need long, well-filtered, well-oxygenated tanks that mimic flowing water, and even the smaller species in the genus are boisterous, midwater fish unsuited to small, sedate community setups. Given that B. coxeyi tops out around 7 in SL, any future aquarium interest should plan around a mid-sized active characin, not a giant food-fish species, but this is a reasonable extrapolation rather than documented aquarium experience with the species itself.

This reflects a genuine absence of population, range-extent and threat data rather than any evidence that the species is secure. Its known range is narrow — the Río Marañón drainage of Ecuador and Peru, including small Andean piedmont tributaries such as the Río Topo — and small-range Andean headwater fish in this region face pressures typical of the area: deforestation, water diversion and small-scale hydropower development, and sedimentation from land-use change in tributary catchments, though no source specifically documents these pressures acting on B. coxeyi. Given the data gap, the most defensible statement is that this species' conservation status is genuinely unknown and would benefit from renewed field survey.
