Taxonomy & naming
Brycon devillei was described by the French naturalist Francis de Laporte de Castelnau in 1855, based on material collected in eastern Brazil during his South American expeditions. It belongs to the family Bryconidae within the order Characiformes — a family that was itself carved out of the old, broadly defined Characidae as part of the wider revision of characin classification, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for the genus placement and valid combination Brycon devillei (Castelnau, 1855).
Brycon is a large genus of 40-plus valid species spread across Central and South America, most of which are substantially larger, wide-ranging river fish valued as food and sport species. B. devillei is unusual within the genus for its restricted eastern-Brazilian distribution and comparatively modest size, and FishBase records it as endemic to the state of Bahia, with the exact type locality noted only broadly as "South America, Bahia, Brazil." Population sampling from the Preto River in the neighbouring Jequitinhonha basin (Minas Gerais) has supplied most of what is known of its biology, but the species is not further subdivided into named populations or location forms.
Morphology
Brycon devillei has the classic Brycon body plan: a streamlined, laterally compressed, silvery characin shape built for sustained swimming rather than the deep, disc-like profile of a pacu or silver dollar. FishBase gives a maximum size of 5.5 in standard length for males and unsexed individuals, while a Brazilian field study on the Preto River population recorded larger total-length figures — up to 10 in TL in males and 13.5 in TL in females, with females running noticeably larger than males. The gap between these figures likely reflects standard length versus total length measurement and different sampled populations rather than a contradiction, but either way this is a modestly sized characin, not one of the large food-fish Brycon that can approach half a metre.
Colouration follows the general Brycon pattern of a bright silver body, though detailed pigmentation notes specific to devillei are not available in the sources consulted here; data sparse on fin colour and any breeding dress.
Habitat
Brycon devillei is native to river systems in eastern Brazil, documented from the Preto River within the Jequitinhonha basin in Minas Gerais and treated by FishBase as endemic to Bahia more broadly — placing it among the eastern Brazilian coastal-draining rivers rather than the Amazon, Orinoco or Paraná systems that carry most of South America's characin diversity. Feeding
Brycon devillei is described in the Preto River study as a specialist surface-picker: it feeds heavily on terrestrial insects and plant debris that fall or wash into the river, a foraging style very different from the detritus- and algae-grazing habit of the hemiodus and curimatas in this group. FishBase's trophic-level estimate of 2.8 ± 0.3 places it as broadly herbivorous/detritivorous on average, but the same field study documents genuinely opportunistic omnivory: the species also hunts small characins, including Astyanax species, and does so with coordinated, shoal-level hunting behaviour rather than solitary ambush.
The study also records an unusual nuclear-follower association, in which B. devillei occasionally feeds alongside Leporinus garmani, exploiting food items the other species disturbs — a rare documented example of interspecific feeding cooperation in a characin. What is known from its biology argues for caution rather than a ready care sheet: it is a shoaling, actively swimming, surface-feeding characin that in the wild hunts small fish and shows intraspecific aggression, all of which point toward a fast, spacious, open-water setup with company of its own kind rather than a quiet community tank — but this is inference from field biology, not documented aquarium experience.
As a narrow-range Brazilian endemic already assessed as Endangered, any interest in keeping this species should be weighed against its conservation status; there is no indication in the sources consulted that an aquarium-trade population exists, and wild collection of an Endangered, habitat-restricted characin would be a genuine concern rather than a routine stocking decision.

The Preto River field study explicitly identifies riparian vegetation as critical to the species' survival, both as a feeding resource and as a marker of habitat integrity — implying that streamside deforestation, agricultural conversion and the general degradation of small eastern Brazilian rivers are the operative threats, consistent with the pressures facing many of Brazil's non-Amazonian endemic freshwater fish.
