Taxonomy & naming
Brycon dulcis was formally described by Lima and Vieira in 2017, one of a wave of newly recognised Brycon species resolved out of the genus's long history of taxonomic confusion. It belongs to the family Bryconidae within the order Characiformes — the piabanhas and their relatives, a group historically lumped with the pacus and silver dollars of Serrasalmidae but now treated as its own family in modern classifications following the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences).
The type locality is the rio Corrente Grande, a tributary of the rio Doce in Minas Gerais, and the species is endemic to that single basin — it has not been recorded from the Amazon, Orinoco, or the Central American river systems that some other Brycon species reach. "Piabanha" is the Brazilian vernacular applied broadly to mid-sized to large Brycon across the country's coastal and inland drainages, and it is the name most commonly attached to this species and its relatives in the region rather than any invented aquarium-trade name.
Morphology
Like other Brycon, B. dulcis has the classic piabanha build: a moderately deep, laterally compressed, fusiform body built for sustained fast swimming rather than the diamond-shaped ambush profile of a true piranha, with a forked tail and a mouth armed with strong, multicuspid teeth suited to a mixed diet of fruit, seeds and smaller fish. Published standard-length measurements for the species range from about 2.5 in up to 14.5 in SL, meaning this is a genuinely large characin at full size — well over 12 in — not a nano or community-tank fish.
Colouration in Brycon generally runs silvery on the flanks with darker dorsal shading and can show a dusky humeral spot and dark tail-fin margins typical of the genus; species-level colour detail specific to B. dulcis beyond the type description is sparse in the available literature, and this account does not speculate beyond what the source material documents.
Habitat
Brycon dulcis is restricted to the rio Doce basin of eastern Brazil, spanning the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. Within that basin it has been recorded in the middle and lower reaches, including the rio Corrente Grande type locality and, notably, a 2014 record from Lagoa de Juparanã — a large natural lake connected to the lower rio Doce — which indicates the species still persists there despite broader basin decline.
The rio Doce is a warm, tropical river system running through heavily settled and industrialised eastern Brazil, and the species' water is broadly soft-to-neutral and mildly acidic in character, consistent with Neotropical river and floodplain conditions in the region. It was largely extirpated from the lower basin after the 1960s as the river degraded, and today the more secure populations are concentrated in middle-basin tributaries and the state park lake system rather than the mainstem lower river.
Feeding
Brycon as a genus are documented as opportunistic omnivores with a diet that shifts sharply with size: smaller juveniles feed heavily on aquatic and terrestrial insects, while larger juveniles and adults shift toward fruit, seeds and algae, which can make up 60% or more of the diet in some species, alongside continued opportunistic predation on smaller fish. They are also noted jumpers, capable of leaping roughly a metre out of the water to pluck fruit from overhanging branches — a behaviour recorded across the genus and a useful reminder that these are not passive grazers.

Given B. dulcis reaches at least 14.5 in SL, well over 12 in, any prospective keeper should size a tank for a genuinely large adult fish, not a juvenile purchase size — the same size-trap caution that applies to other large characins and pacus. In practice, this species is best understood as a conservation subject rather than a hobby fish at present.
Conservation
Brycon dulcis is assessed Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its extremely narrow endemic range — confined entirely to the rio Doce basin of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo — combined with severe, ongoing degradation of that system. The rio Doce has been extensively affected by pollution, siltation and deforestation for decades, and the species was extirpated from the lower basin after the 1960s; it survives today mainly in middle-basin tributaries and the Rio Doce State Park lake system, with a 2014 record from Lagoa de Juparanã suggesting some persistence even in the more disturbed lower basin.
The basin's best-known and most catastrophic recent pressure is the 2015 Fundão tailings dam collapse near Mariana, Minas Gerais, which sent a wave of mining waste down the rio Doce to the Atlantic coast — one of Brazil's worst environmental disasters and a direct threat to any fish endemic to this river system. As a single-basin endemic in an already degraded and disaster-affected watershed, B. dulcis is a clear conservation priority rather than a fisheries or aquarium-trade species.
