Taxonomy & naming
Brycon ferox was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1877. It belongs to the family Bryconidae within the order Characiformes, a family that was carved out of the old, much broader "Characidae" as characin systematics were revised, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the type material as a lectotype (NMW 62930, 9.5 in SL) with paralectotypes (NMW 62937, 9.5–10.5 in SL) held at the Natural History Museum Vienna — a reminder that the species was described from specimens already approaching its known adult size.
The genus Brycon is a large, still actively revised group of South and Central American river characins sometimes called "tetra-like" for their silvery, characin-typical body plan, though the resemblance stops at general shape: many Brycon species, including B. ferox, grow far larger and hunt far more actively than the small tetras most aquarists associate with the order. Diagnostic features cited for the species include a fifth infraorbital bone and an anisognathous (unevenly hinged) mouth with a pointed premaxillary, details used to separate it from closely related Brycon species in the same coastal drainage system.
Morphology
Brycon ferox is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed characin with the classic silvery Brycon flank and a robust, muscular build suited to holding position in flowing river water. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 12 in for the species, placing it well above the size of most characins kept in home aquaria and confirming this as a genuinely large-bodied member of the family rather than an oddity within it.
The mouth is anisognathous — the upper and lower jaws are not evenly matched — with a pointed premaxillary bone, and the species carries a fifth infraorbital bone, both features used by taxonomists to distinguish it from related Brycon species sharing its range. As in other Brycon, the dentition is built for grasping and shearing rather than the fine-nipping teeth of true piranhas, consistent with a diet that includes live prey fish alongside fruit and plant matter.
Habitat
The species is restricted to coastal river drainages of eastern Brazil, with FishBase citing the Mucuri River basin specifically — a system running from northern Espírito Santo into southern Bahia — as its known range, and the Mucuri River itself as the type locality. This is a narrow endemic range compared with the wide, multi-basin distributions typical of Amazonian or Orinoco characins, and it places B. ferox among the more geographically restricted members of its genus.
FishBase classifies the species as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical habitats, consistent with a river-dwelling characin that moves through the water column rather than hugging the substrate. Breeding

Given the size the species reaches and its restricted natural range, it should be assumed unavailable as a captive-bred aquarium fish and, where kept, sourced and kept responsibly rather than expected to spawn at home.

Brycon ferox is not a fish for a standard community tank: a maximum recorded length of 12 in SL means an adult needs a large, long aquarium with strong water movement and open swimming space, more in line with tank-busting characins than with typical tetras. Its genus is documented as an opportunistic, competitive feeder, so tankmates should be chosen for size and speed rather than assumed safe simply because they are "tetra-like" fish; anything small enough to be taken as prey is at risk, and the species' predatory streak should be planned around rather than discovered.
Because dedicated aquarium-keeping information for this specific species is sparse in the sources reviewed, prospective keepers should treat husbandry parameters (temperature, pH, exact minimum tank size) as provisional and lean toward the generous end of what is typical for large riverine Brycon species: warm tropical water, robust filtration for a strong bioload, and a very large footprint. Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Brycon ferox as Least Concern. Despite that overall status, the species' known range is narrow — restricted to the Mucuri River basin and neighbouring coastal drainages of eastern Brazil — which makes it more exposed to localised pressures such as damming, deforestation-linked sedimentation and water-quality decline than a wide-ranging Amazonian or Orinoco species would be, even without a change in its formal listing.
