Taxonomy & naming
Brycon fowleri was described by the Colombian ichthyologist Georg Dahl in 1955. It belongs to the family Bryconidae, one of the characin families split out of the old, broadly defined Characidae, and to the genus Brycon, a group of mid-sized to large Neotropical river characins distinguished from the piranhas and pacus of Serrasalmidae by their more streamlined, laterally compressed body and their conical, multicuspid teeth adapted for an omnivorous rather than strictly carnivorous or herbivorous diet.
The species is one of several Brycon endemic to the Sinú River basin in northern Colombia — ETYFish's family-level treatment of Bryconidae counts eight species restricted to that single Caribbean-slope drainage, an unusually high level of local endemism for the genus.
