Brycon howesi is a large river characin described only in 2017, known so far from a single Brazilian river system: the rio Jequitinhonha basin of Minas Gerais, far outside the Amazon and Orinoco drainages most Brycon species call home. Like the rest of its genus, it belongs to the fast, deep-bodied, silver "matrinxã" lineage of characins — active, food-driven, omnivorous-to-predatory fish that can reach 15.5–19.5 in as adults, a size that dwarfs the tetras most aquarists associate with the order Characiformes. Almost nothing has been published on this species beyond its original description; this account reports what is documented and is honest about the rest.

Taxonomy & naming

Brycon howesi was described by Flávio Lima in 2017 as part of a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the cis-Andean species of Brycon, a genus long recognised as taxonomically difficult because of the strong similarity between species and the wide geographic scatter of poorly-studied populations. The genus sits in the family Bryconidae within the order Characiformes, a lineage of mostly fast-swimming, deep-river characins sometimes grouped in older literature under the broader Characidae.

The type specimen, holotype MZUSP 103075, measures 9 in standard length and was collected from the rio Jequitinhonha at its confluence with the rio Araçuaí, below the village of Itira, in the municipality of Araçuaí, Minas Gerais, Brazil (approximately 16°45'S, 42°0'W). As currently understood, Brycon howesi is endemic to the rio Jequitinhonha basin, a coastal Brazilian drainage that does not connect to the Amazon or Paraná systems where most of its congeners occur. Because the species was described so recently, it is not yet covered in most general aquarium or fisheries literature, and older references to Brycon in this basin may not distinguish it from other, better-known species.

Morphology

Brycon howesi is known in detail only from its type series, and a full published account of its live colouration and fin-ray counts is not available in the sources consulted here. In line with the genus, it can be expected to show the classic Brycon build: a moderately elongated, laterally compressed, silver-flanked body, a forked tail often edged in dark pigment, and a mouth armed with small, sharp, multicuspid teeth suited to an opportunistic, food-grabbing lifestyle rather than the blade-like slicing teeth of true piranhas.

The holotype was 9 in SL, but that is a single measured specimen, not a documented maximum. Brycon as a genus regularly reaches 15.5–19.5 in in adulthood, and there is no basis in the available sources to assume B. howesi is smaller; prospective keepers should plan around the genus-typical adult size rather than the holotype's dimensions alone.

Habitat

The only locality documented for Brycon howesi is the rio Jequitinhonha basin in Minas Gerais, Brazil, specifically around the confluence of the rio Jequitinhonha and rio Araçuaí. This is a river system distinct from the Amazon, Orinoco and Paraná basins that host most Brycon species, which makes B. howesi a narrow-range basin endemic as currently documented, though the true extent of its range within the Jequitinhonha system has not been assessed in the sources available.

Specific water chemistry and depth data for the type locality were not captured in the available sources. Based on the genus generally, Brycon species favour warm, well-oxygenated, flowing river habitat with soft-to-neutral water; this should be treated as a genus-level inference rather than a site-specific finding for B. howesi until more targeted data is published.

Feeding

This is typical for a species described as recently as 2017 and known from a narrow endemic range in a single Brazilian coastal river basin, the rio Jequitinhonha — a system that, unlike it or not, receives far less ichthyological survey attention than the Amazon or Paraná.
