Brycon labiatus was described by Franz Steindachner in 1879 and placed in the family Bryconidae (historically treated within a broader Characidae), a family of mid-to-large Neotropical characins often called dorados or jaw characins for their heavily toothed maxillae. A subsequent 1880 account by Steindachner used the name Othonophanes labiatus for the same fish, a synonymy noted by Braum's 1983 review of the genus; modern taxonomic registries, including Wikidata and the World Register of Marine Species, continue to list Brycon labiatus Steindachner, 1879 as the valid combination.
A 2016 Zootaxa revision of cis-Andean Brycon species by Lima and colleagues did not include B. labiatus among the roughly twenty-one species it treated, which suggests the species sits outside that particular Amazon-lowlands group — likely a trans-Andean or otherwise geographically distinct population rather than a core cis-Andean form. This leaves the species' precise placement within Brycon, and its closest relatives, less settled in the accessible literature than for better-studied congeners such as B. falcatus.
Morphology
