Taxonomy & naming
Brycon oligolepis was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1913 in his paper on the fishes of the San Juan River, Colombia, published in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History. It belongs to the family Bryconidae (the "jaw characins"), a group that was for decades treated as part of a broader Characidae before being split out on the basis of dentition and other characters; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Brycon oligolepis Regan, 1913 as a valid species within the genus Brycon.
The species epithet oligolepis comes from the Greek olígos (few) and lepís (scale), a name Regan chose to flag its comparatively reduced scale count next to related Brycon such as B. moorei from the same trans-Andean region. Brycon itself is a large Neotropical genus of dozens of species, several of which are important food and game fish; B. oligolepis is one of the lesser-known, smaller-bodied members restricted to a narrow Pacific-slope range rather than the widespread Amazon or Orinoco systems that carry the genus's better-known species.
Morphology
Brycon oligolepis has the classic Brycon build: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed, silvery body with a forked tail and a mouth armed with the sharp, close-set teeth typical of the genus's largely predatory-to-omnivorous jaw characins.
