Brycon opalinus, known in Brazil as the pirapitinga do sul, is a large, powerfully built river characin restricted to the Paraíba do Sul and Doce river basins of southeastern Brazil. It belongs to a genus of fast, deep-bodied "matrinxã"-type characins that are neither timid nor small — wild adults reach at least 10 in and behave as active, semi-predatory fish of Atlantic Forest rivers, not the shy scavengers people picture when they hear "piranha relative." It is a migratory, fruit-and-seed-eating fish tied to intact riparian forest, and it is currently classified Vulnerable by the IUCN because of habitat decline and commercial exploitation across its small native range. Brycon opalinus was described by Georges Cuvier in 1819. It belongs to the genus Brycon, a group of large, fast-swimming Neotropical characins historically placed in Characidae but now generally recognised — per the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) — in its own family, Bryconidae, separate from the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars of Serrasalmidae despite superficial resemblance in body shape. Brycon species across South and Central America are collectively known by names like matrinxã, sábalo or pirapitinga depending on the region; in the Paraíba do Sul and Doce basins of southeastern Brazil, B. opalinus is known locally as pirapitinga do sul ("southern pirapitinga").

The species is one of several restricted-range Brycon endemic to small coastal drainages of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, a biome with a long history of taxonomic revision as regional populations once lumped under wider-ranging names have been split out. B. opalinus is currently treated as a valid, distinct species confined to its two home basins rather than a synonym or subspecies of a more widely distributed Brycon.

Morphology

Brycon opalinus has the classic build of its genus: a moderately deep, laterally compressed, torpedo-like body suited to sustained swimming in flowing water, a terminal mouth armed with strong conical and multicuspid teeth, and a deeply forked tail typical of an active, migratory fish rather than a sedentary one. FishBase records a maximum published size of 10.5 in standard length for the species, a solidly large-bodied characin by aquarium standards even if modest next to some of its Amazonian congeners.

As with other large, actively swimming river characins, this is a specialist's fish rather than a beginner community addition, and — as with any large characin from a restricted, Vulnerable-listed wild population — sourcing from captive-bred stock where possible is preferable to wild collection.

Brycon opalinus is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment dated 2018 citing criteria B2ab(iii,iv,v) — reflecting a restricted geographic range combined with ongoing decline in habitat extent/quality and in population size. Its entire known distribution is confined to the Paraíba do Sul and Doce river basins of southeastern Brazil, one of the most heavily altered and deforested regions of the country, and researchers point to commercial exploitation (it is a food and game fish, locally called pirapitinga do sul) together with environmental degradation of its Atlantic Forest headwater streams as the drivers behind its vulnerable status.

Because the species' natural reproduction is linked to river connectivity and healthy riparian forest, damming, sedimentation and habitat fragmentation within its small range are direct long-term threats, not distant background pressures. This makes B. opalinus a useful contrast to widely distributed, farmed Neotropical food fish: its restricted endemism means overfishing and habitat loss in just two river basins can meaningfully threaten the whole species.
