Brycon posadae is a small, little-known member of a genus that otherwise runs large: while relatives such as Brycon cephalus grow past 12 in and behave as powerful, agile predators, this Colombian endemic is documented at only 1.5–6 in, restricted to the Mira River basin on the Pacific slope. It carries the family's characteristic silvery, laterally compressed build and sharp dentition, but almost nothing about its aquarium biology, breeding, or day-to-day habits has been published — most of what is known comes from museum specimens and range surveys rather than aquarium or field-behaviour studies. It is a fish better understood by what its genus typically does than by direct observation of this species itself.

Taxonomy & naming

Brycon posadae was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1945, placing it in the genus Brycon within the family Bryconidae — a lineage that, along with the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars of Serrasalmidae, sits in the characin order Characiformes. The genus Brycon itself has a long and complicated taxonomic history; older literature sometimes lumps its species with the broader "characin" assemblage that used to include pacus and silver dollars before Serrasalmidae was split out, but Brycon has always been treated as its own genus of active, torpedo-bodied river characins. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the reference for the currently valid combination.

The species epithet honours Andrés Posada Arango, a Colombian physician and naturalist, reflecting the specimens' South American, and specifically Colombian, origin. Brycon posadae is one of many regionally restricted Brycon species scattered across Central and South American river systems, most of which are far less studied than the handful of larger, food-fish species in the genus that dominate the aquaculture and aquarium literature.

Morphology

Like other Brycon, Brycon posadae has the classic minor-characin build: a streamlined, laterally compressed, silvery body suited to fast-water swimming, with the genus's typical row of sharp, multicuspid teeth adapted for an omnivorous to partly predatory diet. Documented specimens from the Mira basin range from 1.5–6 in, which is small for the genus — many Brycon species reach 12–31.5 in as adults — and suggests B. posadae is one of the smaller-bodied members of the group, though the sample of measured fish is limited.

No detailed published account of colour pattern, fin shape or other distinguishing morphological features specific to B. posadae is available from the sources consulted here; identification within the genus in the field relies on technical characters (tooth counts, scale counts, fin-ray formulas) rather than obvious external field marks, and that level of detail is not established for this species in the available literature.

Habitat

Brycon posadae is endemic to Colombia, known from the Mira River basin, a Pacific-slope drainage in the country's southwest that empties into the Pacific Ocean near the Colombia–Ecuador border. This places it in a very different biogeographic zone from the well-known Amazon and Orinoco Brycon species — the Mira is a comparatively short, steep coastal basin rather than a lowland Amazonian river system.
