Brycon stolzmanni is a little-documented member of the "tetra gone large" genus Brycon, described by Franz Steindachner in 1879 from the upper Río Marañón basin of Peru, high in the Andean headwaters of the Amazon. Like its relatives, it is not a shy scavenger or a fin-nipper needing a group for confidence — Brycon are powerful, fast-swimming, largely predatory characins that grow well beyond tetra scale, and several species in the genus are important food and sport fish across their range. Brycon stolzmanni itself remains poorly studied outside the taxonomic literature that distinguishes it from its close relative B. coxeyi in the same river system; it has no formal IUCN assessment, no confirmed aquarium history, and no reliable published size, so this account states plainly what is and is not known rather than filling the gaps with genus-level assumption.

Taxonomy & naming

Brycon stolzmanni was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1879, one of dozens of characin species he named from South American collections during the nineteenth century. It belongs to the family Bryconidae within the order Characiformes — a family of mostly medium-to-large, fast-swimming, often silvery characins that includes the genus Brycon and the golden dorado's relatives, and which sits apart from the piranha-and-pacu family Serrasalmidae despite superficial resemblance in some species.

The type locality is the upper Río Marañón basin in Peru, the Andean headwater system that feeds the Amazon, and GBIF records the species as a recognized, valid member of the genus, treated in the major 2017 taxonomic revision of cis-Andean Brycon species (Zootaxa 4222). That revision — not directly accessible for size or ecological data in this review — is understood to lay out the diagnostic characters separating B. stolzmanni from B. coxeyi, a closely related species sharing the same basin: the two are distinguished chiefly by opercular (gill-cover) pigmentation, with B. stolzmanni showing a diffuse dark patch across the upper half of the operculum rather than the discrete central blotch of B. coxeyi. Given how narrow and technical that distinction is, misidentification between the two in any non-specialist record should be assumed possible.

Morphology

No maximum length has been located for Brycon stolzmanni in the sources reviewed for this account, and no measurement should be assumed from the genus average, since Brycon species range enormously in adult size — some barely exceed 6 in, while others (like the well-known B. amazonicus) approach half a metre and several kilograms. What can be said from the genus and family is the general body plan: Brycon are elongate but laterally compressed, fusiform characins built for sustained fast swimming, with a moderately forked to deeply forked tail, a terminal mouth armed with strong conical-to-molariform teeth suited to a mixed predatory and fruit-eating diet, and typically a silvery body with a mid-lateral stripe or dark caudal marking in many species.

The one morphological detail specific to this species in the available record is the diagnostic opercular pigmentation used to separate it from B. coxeyi — a diffuse dusky patch over the upper portion of the gill cover, rather than a compact central spot. Beyond that single diagnostic character, published descriptions of body depth, fin counts, scale counts and colouration for B. stolzmanni were not accessible in this review; this account does not invent them.

Habitat

Brycon stolzmanni is known from the upper Río Marañón basin in Peru, an Andean headwater system of the Amazon that runs at higher elevation and generally cooler, swifter, more oxygenated water than the Amazonian lowlands downstream. Bryconids in general favor moving water — river channels and tributary streams with current — rather than the still floodplain lakes and oxbows preferred by many other Neotropical characins, and many species make seasonal migrations tied to flooding and spawning, though this has not been specifically documented for B. stolzmanni.
