Taxonomy & naming
Brycon vermelha was described by Flávio C. T. Lima and Ricardo M. C. Castro in 2000 as a new species of characid fish from the Rio Mucuri, a coastal drainage of eastern Brazil, placing it among the roughly forty valid species currently recognised in Brycon. The genus itself sits in the family Bryconidae under the Catalog of Fishes' current classification, a lineage that was long treated as part of a broader "Characidae" before family-level revisions split the large-bodied, migratory Brycon lineage out on its own.
The species epithet vermelha is Portuguese for "red," a direct reference to the fish's most distinctive feature: the strong red colouration on its dorsal, adipose, caudal and anal fins, which separates it from the silvery-finned Brycon species it otherwise resembles in body shape.
