Taxonomy & naming
Characidium etheostoma was described by the American paleontologist and ichthyologist Edward Drinker Cope in 1872, based on material from the Amazon basin. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae, the South American darters and sailfin characins, and specifically to the subfamily-level darter lineage built around the genus Characidium — a large, taxonomically active genus of small, bottom-associated characins that is quite distinct within Crenuchidae from the more familiar, showier sailfin characins such as Crenuchus and Poecilocharax.
The species epithet "etheostoma" borrows the name of the North American darter genus Etheostoma (family Percidae), a group of small, bottom-perching freshwater fish that Characidium converges on strongly in body shape and behaviour despite being unrelated and separated by an ocean and tens of millions of years of evolution — a case of the describer naming a South American fish for the superficially similar-looking, similarly-behaving North American fish it reminded him of. Characidium as a genus has seen substantial taxonomic revision and new species descriptions in recent decades, and identification within the genus is difficult and often requires close examination of scale counts, fin-ray counts and colour-pattern details rather than a casual look; this account follows Characidium etheostoma as currently recognised.
Morphology
Characidium etheostoma is a small, slender, cylindrical fish that tops out at around 1.5 in standard length, placing it firmly in nano-fish territory. Like other members of the genus, it has a reduced swim bladder, an adaptation that reduces buoyancy and helps the fish sit and perch on the substrate rather than hold station in open water the way most characins do — a key reason darters look and behave more like small gobies or true darters than like tetras.

It is social and does best kept in a group, mirroring its habit in the wild of sharing stretches of stream bottom with others of its kind; a single specimen is likely to spend most of its time hidden rather than active on display.
Because it is a poor flake-eater and a dedicated micro-predator, the tank should be stocked with fast, food-savvy tankmates in mind — or better, kept with peaceful, similarly small nano companions that will not out-compete it for live and frozen foods at feeding time. A soft, sand-or-fine-gravel substrate with some open space to perch, moderate-to-strong current, and clean, well-oxygenated water reproduce the fast stream conditions this species is built for; this is not a fish for a warm, still, heavily stocked tank.
Conservation
