Characidium etzeli is a small, slender darter characin from the Paraná River basin of Paraguay, a member of the Crenuchidae — the South American darters and sailfin characins. Like the rest of its genus it behaves less like a typical shoaling tetra and more like a true darter goby: it perches on its pectoral and pelvic fins on wood, gravel or leaf litter, then darts in short bursts to snatch tiny invertebrate prey before settling again. Reaching barely 2 in, it is a genuinely nano-scale fish, and its narrow, camouflaged body and cryptic bottom-dwelling habits mean it is easy to overlook even in its native streams. In the aquarium it is an undemanding but easily starved fish — it is a micro-predator that will often ignore flake outright — and it rewards a keeper who sets up a naturalistic, cooler subtropical stream tank with a steady trickle of small live or frozen foods.

It belongs to the genus Characidium within the family Crenuchidae, the South American darters and sailfin characins, a family whose members are unified less by flashy colour than by a distinctive perching, sit-and-dart lifestyle on the stream bed — a strong contrast with the open-water shoaling habit of most other small Characiformes.

Characidium is a large and taxonomically active genus of small, elongate, often cryptically banded or speckled darters, and species-level identification within it is difficult and frequently revised, resting on fine details of scale counts, fin-ray formulae and colour pattern rather than anything visible to a casual observer.
