Brycon orbignyanus was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1850. It belongs to the family Bryconidae within the order Characiformes — a family that was carved out of the old, broadly defined "Characidae" as classifications were revised, and one whose genus Brycon (the "river characins" or "matrinxã" group) contains dozens of species distributed across Central and South America, several of them large, fast-swimming, omnivorous-to-predatory fish rather than the small tetras most aquarists associate with the order.
The species epithet honours the French naturalist Alcide d'Orbigny, who explored and collected extensively in South America in the early nineteenth century. The genus Brycon itself sits within Serrasalmidae's wider relatives in Characiformes but is taxonomically distinct from the pacus and true piranhas of Serrasalmidae proper; where the cache and current usage agree, this account keeps the genus as Brycon, without attempting to "correct" it to any alternate combination.

For the rare specialist facility with the resources to house a large river characin long-term, water should be managed as warm, well-oxygenated and well-filtered river conditions consistent with a potamodromous Paraná basin fish, with ample swimming space rather than dense aquascaping.
