Taxonomy & naming
Leporinus elongatus was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1850. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family whose members are named for their habit of feeding at an oblique, head-down angle while grazing algae and detritus from submerged surfaces. The genus Leporinus is large and diverse, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) remains the reference for which of its many nominal species are currently regarded as valid; this account follows the traditional genus placement, Leporinus elongatus.
FishBase notes that the type locality given in the original description is considered erroneous, a common complication for South American freshwater fishes described from nineteenth-century trade specimens with unreliable collection data; the species' confirmed range is the Paraná and La Plata basins. The common names "black-banded leporinus" and "slender leporinus" reflect the elongate body and the dark vertical banding seen in many Leporinus species, though banding pattern and intensity vary with age and mood and should not be relied on alone for identification within the genus.
Morphology
Leporinus elongatus has the characteristic headstander build: an elongate, only moderately compressed body, a small terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth set for grazing rather than seizing prey, and strong, chisel-like incisiform teeth adapted for scraping algae and biofilm off hard surfaces. FishBase records a maximum published length of 19.5 in total length for the species, making it one of the larger members of its genus — considerably bigger than the small, popular banded and spotted headstanders more commonly seen in the trade.
Aquarium care sources describe adult length more conservatively at around 12 in under aquarium conditions, still a substantial fish that needs a correspondingly large tank. Colouration is typical of the genus: a silvery-olive to yellowish body, often with darker vertical or diagonal banding along the flanks, and fins that can show yellow-to-orange tints in good condition. As in most Leporinus, no reliable external difference between the sexes has been documented.
Habitat
The species is native to the Paraná and La Plata river basins of southern South America, a subtropical drainage system spanning parts of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina that runs notably cooler than the equatorial Amazon. Feeding

Like many of its genus, it has a reputation for becoming nippy and territorial with age, particularly toward slower or long-finned tankmates, so stocking choices should favour robust, similarly sized fish and the keeper should be prepared to rehome or isolate an individual that turns persistently aggressive.
A tight-fitting lid is essential — Leporinus are strong, easily startled jumpers and are well known for going over the top of an open tank. Provide driftwood and rock for grazing surfaces, strong filtration for a large, messy eater, and expect soft-leaved plants to be eaten or shredded. Because the species is essentially unreported as a home-bred fish and grows to a genuinely large adult size, prospective keepers should plan for the 12 in-plus fish it will become, not the small juvenile typically sold.
