Taxonomy & naming
Curimata cyprinoides was described by Carl Linnaeus in 1766 as Salmo cyprinoides, based on a specimen supplied by the naturalist Laurens Theodore Gronow (Gronovius); it was subsequently moved into the genus Curimata, the type genus of the family Curimatidae within the order Characiformes. No type specimen locality is definitively documented, which is typical for many of Linnaeus' eighteenth-century descriptions drawn from cabinet specimens rather than field-collected material.
Curimatidae itself has had a complicated taxonomic history, historically lumped with or placed near Prochilodontidae and Anostomidae before modern classifications separated it as a distinct family of small-to-medium, toothless-jawed, detritivorous characiforms. The genus Curimata is one of several curimatid genera (alongside Cyphocharax, Curimatella, Curimatopsis and others) distinguished largely by details of the mouth, gill rakers and squamation. This species keeps the genus Curimata under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the standing authority for valid names used throughout this atlas.
Morphology
Curimata cyprinoides has the compact, moderately deep, laterally compressed body typical of curimatid characins, with a small, blunt, subterminal or ventrally positioned mouth adapted for scraping and sucking rather than biting — the jaws carry no functional teeth. FishBase records a maximum published size of 9 in standard length, a modest figure that keeps this species firmly in the "small, unremarkable-looking shoaler" category rather than anywhere near the large, showy fish that dominate this group's reputation.
