Curimata aspera was described by the English ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1868. It belongs to the family Curimatidae — a large group of toothless, deep-river and floodplain detritivores within the order Characiformes — and to the genus Curimata, one of several curimatid genera (alongside Cyphocharax, Psectrogaster and others) that the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as distinct on skeletal and scale characters rather than obvious external ones.
The species epithet aspera is Latin for "rough," referring to the conspicuously serrated scales along the flanks — a genuinely useful field character in a family where many species otherwise look alike: small, silver, laterally compressed and superficially interchangeable at a glance. As with much of Curimatidae, detailed taxonomic revision work continues, and identification in the field and in the trade relies on scale counts and fine morphological detail rather than colour pattern.
Morphology
Curimata aspera has the classic curimatid build: a small, laterally compressed, silvery body with a blunt, rounded head and a small, subterminal, toothless mouth adapted for grazing rather than biting. FishBase records a maximum published size of 8.5 in standard length for males and unsexed individuals, making this a modest, unremarkable-looking fish next to its more famous serrasalmid relatives.
The standout feature, and the one behind its name, is its scalation: the scales are conspicuously rough or serrated to the touch, a texture uncommon among characins and distinctive enough to separate it from superficially similar curimatids. Beyond that, no sexual dimorphism or striking colour pattern has been documented for the species in the sources available; it is presumed to carry the plain silver countershading typical of the family.
Habitat
The species is native to the Amazon River basin, recorded from western Brazil and eastern Peru.
