Vari in 1984, part of Vari's broader revisionary work on the toothless characins of the family Curimatidae during the 1980s and 1990s that untangled a genus long confused by superficially similar body forms. It sits in the genus Curimata within Curimatidae, a family placed in the order Characiformes alongside the piranhas, pacus, silver dollars and tetras of the wider characin radiation, though curimatids are anatomically distinct from all of those — Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Curimata as the type genus of the family, and the group as a whole is defined by the loss of oral dentition in favour of pharyngeal processing of fine food particles.
The species epithet cerasina derives from the Latin for "cherry-coloured," a direct reference to the reddish flush recorded on the ventral surface of live specimens. As with many curimatids, C. cerasina is a narrow-range endemic rather than a widespread, frequently collected fish, and it is not part of the small handful of curimatid species (mostly Prochilodus and Semaprochilodus relatives, and a few widely traded species) that show up regularly in either the scientific literature or the aquarium trade.
