Curimata inornata was described by Richard P. Vari in 1989, as part of his broader revision of the family Curimatidae. It belongs to Curimata, a genus of small to medium detritivorous characins within Curimatidae, in the order Characiformes; the family is distinct from the pacu-and-piranha family Serrasalmidae, though both sit within the same broader characin radiation. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid combination Curimata inornata, and there is no indication in the available sources of a synonymy or generic reassignment for this species.
The species epithet inornata is Latin for "unadorned" or "plain," a fitting description for a fish whose main visual feature is a uniform silver body without the elaborate spotting, banding or fin colour that distinguishes many of its Curimatidae relatives — a naming pattern common across the plainer detritivorous characins.
Morphology
Curimata inornata has the typical curimatid build: a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed, fusiform fish with a small, subterminal, toothless or near-toothless mouth adapted for sifting fine organic material rather than biting prey or plant matter. FishBase records a maximum length of 8.5 in standard length for the species, a size broadly consistent with other members of the genus.

Were it ever offered, the family-level guidance for Curimatidae — a spacious tank for an active open-water shoaler, soft and mildly acidic water in the low-to-mid 20s °C, a fine soft substrate, and a diet weighted toward vegetable matter, algae wafers and sinking detritus-style foods rather than meaty fare — would be the reasonable starting point, but no species-specific care regime exists to draw on.

The IUCN Red List assessed Curimata inornata as Least Concern, in an assessment dated 7 November 2018, reflecting a wide range across the middle and southern Amazon and Tocantins basins without evidence of significant population decline. As with many of the less conspicuous Curimatidae, Curimata inornata benefits from being one of many detritivore species spread across a very large river system rather than being concentrated in a single vulnerable water body; the broader long-term pressures on the Amazon and Tocantins basins — damming, deforestation-linked sedimentation and water-quality change — remain relevant watch items for the ecosystem even though the species itself is not currently considered threatened.
