Curimata incompta was described by the American ichthyologist Richard P. Vari in 1984, as part of his broader systematic revision of the family Curimatidae and the genus Curimata specifically. It belongs to the order Characiformes and the family Curimatidae — the toothless, detritivorous "toothless characins" that sit alongside the hemiodontids, prochilodontids and anostomids in the broad characiform radiation once lumped together as "minor characins."
