Curimata knerii was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1876, with the type locality given as the Rio Tefé in Amazonas, Brazil; the holotype (NMW 68865) is held at the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna. It belongs to the family Curimatidae — the toothless characins, sometimes called "toothless tetras" in older literature — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Curimata, one of several curimatid genera (alongside Cyphocharax, Psectrogaster and others) that were historically lumped together before revisionary work separated them on skeletal and dental characters.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Curimata knerii as a valid species; the genus name has occasionally been misapplied or confused with similar-looking curimatids in older regional faunal surveys, so records outside the confirmed middle-to-upper Amazon range should be treated cautiously. The species epithet honours the Austrian zoologist Rudolf Kner, a contemporary of Steindachner's who himself described numerous Amazonian fishes, including the red-bellied piranha.
