Cyphocharax leucostictus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Rosa Smith Eigenmann in 1889. It belongs to the genus Cyphocharax within the family Curimatidae, part of the order Characiformes. GBIF confirms both the authority and the placement in Characiformes: Curimatidae. Curimatidae species lack the well-developed jaw teeth found in piranhas, pacus and most other characins — hence the family's common informal name, the "toothless characins" — and instead rely on a highly modified pharyngeal apparatus to process algae, biofilm and fine organic detritus scraped or sifted from the substrate.
