Taxonomy & naming
Distichodus maculatus was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) confirms Boulenger's authorship and the species' status as a valid name within the genus. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae, a group of characiform fishes endemic to Africa, within the wider superfamily that also contains the citharinids (Citharinidae) — deep-bodied grazing relatives sometimes still discussed alongside Distichodus in older literature, which is the source of some lingering taxonomic confusion around the common name "citharinid" attached to this species.
The genus Distichodus itself spans a wide range of body forms and adult sizes, from small, slender species to the large, heavily built D. sexfasciatus and D. lusosso that dominate the aquarium side of the genus's reputation; D. maculatus sits within that spread as a moderately deep-bodied, blotched species.
