Distichodus mossambicus was described by the German naturalist Wilhelm Peters in 1852, with the specific epithet referring to Mozambique, the country from which the type material was collected. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae, a group of African characins distinct from the piranhas and pacus of Serrasalmidae, and to the genus Distichodus, whose roughly 20 valid species (per the Catalog of Fishes, Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) range from small, peaceful nano fish to large, robust river grazers like this species and the better-known D. sexfasciatus and D. lusosso.
The genus name Distichodus derives from Greek roots referring to a double row of teeth, a reference to the dentition shared across the genus. Morphology
Distichodus mossambicus has the characteristic Distichodus body plan: an elongate, moderately compressed form with a small, underslung, almost tubular mouth set low on a pointed snout, adapted for grazing rather than grasping prey.
