Distichodus schenga is a large, elongate African characin from the middle and lower Zambezi drainage and neighbouring Mozambican rivers, growing to a genuinely substantial 19.5 in standard length — a size that puts it well outside the range of a typical community tank. Like its relatives in the genus, it is not a predator: it is an omnivorous grazer that favours algae and plant matter over animal prey, shoaling over rock and sand in its home rivers and undertaking upstream spawning migrations during the summer rains. It is essentially absent from the aquarium trade, and hard data on its captive care and breeding are sparse; what follows sticks closely to what FishBase, the IUCN Red List and the Catalog of Fishes actually document.

Taxonomy & naming

Distichodus schenga was described by the German naturalist Wilhelm Peters in 1852, in the proceedings of the Prussian Academy of Sciences, from syntypes collected at Tette on the Zambezi River in Mozambique and now held at the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin (ZMB 3565). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) lists the species as valid within the genus Distichodus, family Distichodontidae, part of the broader African characin radiation that also includes the deep-bodied, algae-grazing citharinids and the ambush predator Hepsetus.

Distichodus is a taxonomically stable genus by African-characin standards — the wholesale generic reshuffling seen in the South American Serrasalmidae (silver dollars split out of Myleus, pacus split out of Colossoma) has no equivalent here. D. schenga is one of several similarly built, medium-to-large Distichodus species native to southeastern Africa, and species-level identification in the field rests on fin-ray counts, scale counts along the lateral line, and the pattern of dark barring on the flanks rather than on any single obvious external trait.

Morphology

Distichodus schenga has the elongate, moderately compressed, torpedo-like body typical of the genus, carried on a small, underslung, herbivore-adapted mouth rather than the blade-toothed jaws of a piranha. FishBase records a maximum length of 19.5 in standard length and a maximum recorded weight of 6.4 kg, making this one of the larger Distichodus species and a genuinely big fish by aquarium standards — not a nano or even a typical medium-community characin.

Data on fine details of colouration and fin shape specific to this species are sparse in the sources available; as in other Distichodus, expect a silvery-to-olive body, dusky vertical banding that can fade or intensify with mood and age, and a deeply forked tail suited to a fish that shoals and migrates in open river water rather than hiding in cover.

Habitat

The species is native to southeastern Africa, documented from the middle and lower Zambezi drainage together with the Pungwe and Buzi rivers in Mozambique, and the Catalog of Fishes extends its geographic range across Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is a tropical freshwater fish that shoals over rock and sand substrates in river channels rather than the densely vegetated backwaters favoured by some other African characins.

Specific temperature and pH data for wild D. schenga populations are not given in the sources reviewed here; general Distichodus care literature suggests a pH range of roughly 6.0–8.0 and a temperature range of roughly 73–81 °F for related species in the genus, consistent with warm African river conditions, but this should be treated as an approximation for the genus rather than a measured figure for this species specifically.

In keeping with this diet, a captive diet for the species — where it is kept at all — would need to lean heavily on vegetable matter: blanched vegetables, spirulina-based foods and algae wafers, supplemented with only modest amounts of protein. Distichodus schenga is essentially absent from the aquarium trade, and hobby-specific husbandry data for this exact species are sparse. What can be said with confidence follows directly from its documented biology: at up to 19.5 in SL and 6.4 kg, this is a large, fast-growing river fish that would need a very large, long aquarium to accommodate as an adult, in the same size class as the better-known large Distichodus species (such as D. sexfasciatus and D. lusosso) that do occasionally appear in the trade and are notorious for outgrowing home tanks and for shredding live plants.

Given its algae-and-plant-leaning diet, a heavily planted tank is a poor match for this species unless the keeper is prepared to accept the plants as a food source; a river-tank setup with strong water movement, sand or rock substrate, and a vegetable-forward diet would better match its documented ecology. Because it is a shoaling species in the wild, keeping singletons long-term is not ideal, though tank size at adult scale makes a proper group impractical for the overwhelming majority of home aquarists. In practice this is a public-aquarium or large-pond fish rather than a realistic home-tank prospect.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Distichodus schenga as Least Concern, in an assessment dated 2022, reflecting a wide native range across the middle and lower Zambezi drainage plus the Pungwe and Buzi rivers, spanning Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe, with no indication of significant population decline. As with many African riverine fish, the longer-term pressures relevant to this species are the general ones facing the Zambezi system — damming, water abstraction and habitat modification — rather than any species-specific threat documented in the sources reviewed here. The species is not meaningfully present in the aquarium trade, so collection for the hobby is not a relevant conservation pressure for D. schenga.
