Taxonomy & naming
Distichodus sexfasciatus was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1897. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae — the African distichodins — within the order Characiformes, a family confined entirely to Africa and only distantly related to the New World characins such as tetras and piranhas that share the same order. The genus Distichodus is large and morphologically diverse, ranging from small, slender, largely peaceful species kept as nano fish to big, laterally compressed grazers like this one; D. sexfasciatus sits at the large, robust end of that spread alongside relatives such as D. lusosso.
The species epithet sexfasciatus is straightforward Latin for "six-banded," describing the six dark vertical bars that cross the body, and it remains the accepted valid name under the genus Distichodus with no indication of a recent generic reshuffle of the kind that has restructured other characiform families such as Serrasalmidae. Juveniles and subadults are the fish most often seen in the trade and in photographs; the banding and the bright orange-red fins fade somewhat and the body deepens considerably as the fish matures.
Morphology
Distichodus sexfasciatus has an elongated, laterally compressed body that becomes noticeably deeper and more robust with age, a small, subterminal, downturned mouth suited to grazing rather than seizing prey, and a generally streamlined profile built for cruising along vegetated river margins rather than for the burst-speed ambush of a predatory characin. The most distinctive feature, and the source of both its common and scientific names, is a series of six bold black vertical bars set against a body flushed with orange to red, most vivid on the fins, especially in younger fish.
FishBase and Seriously Fish both cite a maximum recorded length of around 29.5–30 in in the wild, though aquarium specimens rarely approach that size and more commonly top out around 15.5 in under captive conditions — still a substantial fish. As the animal grows, the banding tends to soften and the overall coloration becomes duller and more uniformly silvery-olive, a common pattern in the genus that catches out keepers who buy small, brightly barred juveniles without anticipating the adult they will become.
Habitat
The species is native to Central Africa, recorded from the Congo River basin and from Lake Tanganyika, with occurrence records spanning Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tanzania. Within that range it favours slow-moving, well-vegetated stretches of river and associated backwaters, habitats that supply both the cover and the abundant aquatic plant growth its grazing diet depends on.
Water across this range is warm, as is typical of Central African lowland rivers and the Tanganyika littoral, with Seriously Fish citing a temperature range of roughly 72–79 °F and a pH of 6.0–7.5 for the species — moderate, not the extreme soft blackwater conditions associated with some South American characins. Structure in the form of submerged and marginal vegetation is a consistent theme across the sources, both as shelter and as a food source, and it is directly reflected in the species' feeding ecology and in its notorious impact on planted aquaria.
Feeding
Distichodus sexfasciatus is fundamentally an omnivore with a strong lean toward plant matter — sources describe it as herbivorous to omnivorous, grazing on aquatic vegetation, algae and plant material in the wild, with animal matter making up a smaller part of the diet. This is a browsing, plant-shredding fish, not a hunter, and its small downturned mouth and grazing behaviour are consistent with that ecology.
In the aquarium, keepers are advised to offer a diet heavy in vegetable matter — blanched spinach, peas, lettuce and similar greens, along with cucumber and other soft vegetables — supplemented with occasional live or frozen protein such as earthworms, prawn or mussel. A diet too heavy in protein and too light in vegetable matter is generally discouraged for grazing characins of this kind, and the species' appetite for green matter is exactly why it is considered unsuitable for planted tanks: live aquatic plants are treated as food, not decoration.
Mating
No courtship behaviour, pairing pattern or external sexual dimorphism has been documented for Distichodus sexfasciatus in the sources reviewed here. Sex cannot currently be reliably distinguished by external appearance, and no reports of pairing, colour change or size difference between sexes turned up in FishBase, Seriously Fish or the other cache sources — the data on this side of the species' biology is genuinely sparse rather than simply unremarked.
Breeding
Distichodus sexfasciatus is not known to have been bred in captivity. Both FishBase and Seriously Fish explicitly note that breeding has not been recorded in the aquarium, which is consistent with the pattern across most Distichodus and citharinid African characins: these are large-river egg-scattering fish whose reproduction, so far as it is understood at all, likely depends on seasonal river conditions and long-distance movement that a home aquarium cannot replicate.
All individuals in the aquarium trade should be assumed to be wild-caught or, less commonly, farmed from wild broodstock rather than aquarium-bred, and prospective keepers should not expect to spawn this species at home. This is a case where the honest answer is that breeding data simply does not exist yet, not that a mode can be inferred from a related species.
In the aquarium
The single most important fact for a prospective keeper is size: Distichodus sexfasciatus is routinely sold as an attractively banded juvenile a few centimetres long, but it can reach roughly 29.5 in in the wild and commonly 15.5 in or more even in captivity, becoming a deep-bodied, heavy-bodied adult that few home aquaria are built to hold. Seriously Fish recommends a minimum tank footprint on the order of 150 x 60 x 23.5 in (roughly 145 US gal) for an adult, and that figure only grows if the fish is kept with others of its kind or with sizeable tankmates.
Temperament compounds the size problem: sources describe juveniles shoaling peacefully but adults becoming increasingly territorial and "spiteful," to the point of being considered unsuitable for general community tanks. The species' strong preference for plant matter also makes it a poor fit for a planted aquarium — live vegetation is reliably grazed down or shredded rather than left decorative. Water should be kept warm (roughly 72–82 °F across the cited ranges) and close to neutral (pH 6.0–7.5), with strong filtration to handle a large, messy grazer. Given the adult size, the aggressive temperament and the total absence of captive-breeding records, this is a species best suited to large, dedicated setups such as sizeable cichlid or catfish community tanks rather than typical planted community aquaria.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Distichodus sexfasciatus as Least Concern, an assessment dated 2009, reflecting its wide distribution across Congo Basin drainages and Lake Tanganyika and the absence of evidence for a major ongoing population decline. The assessment does flag general pressures relevant to the species — decline of wetland habitat and harvest both for the aquarium trade and for local human consumption — while noting that the species is not currently considered under major threat.
Because captive breeding is not established, the aquarium trade in this species is understood to rely on wild-caught specimens, which ties its long-term conservation picture directly to the health of Congo Basin river systems and their wetlands — a broader concern for many species endemic to the region, even where, as here, the individual species is not presently classified as threatened.
