Hemiodus immaculatus was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1858. It belongs to the genus Hemiodus, one of several genera historically grouped under the family Hemiodontidae — the hemiodontids — within the order Characiformes, a lineage separate from the true piranhas and pacus of Serrasalmidae despite sharing the same broad characin body plan in places. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name and combination; this article follows that placement and does not attempt to reassign the genus.
Hemiodus is a moderately large genus of slender, silver, actively shoaling South American characins, and H. immaculatus is one of several similar-looking congeners in the trade, including H. gracilis, that are frequently confused with one another.
