Taxonomy & naming
Hemiodus langeanii was described by Beltrão and Zuanon in 2012 from material collected in the Rio Amana, part of the Rio Maués-Açú drainage on the Pará/Amazonas border in the Brazilian Amazon. It belongs to the family Hemiodontidae — the hemiodontids, a distinct Characiformes lineage from the piranhas and pacus of Serrasalmidae — and to the genus Hemiodus, a group of streamlined, silver, upper-jaw-toothless characins recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) as holding several dozen valid species distributed across Amazonian and Guianan river systems.
As a comparatively recently described, single-drainage species, H. langeanii has not accumulated the layers of taxonomic revision or the trade-name confusion seen in older, wider-ranging Hemiodus species; the original description (Beltrão & Zuanon, 2012, published via the relevant ichthyological literature) remains the primary reference for its diagnosis. It is not known to be sold under any established common name in the aquarium trade.
Morphology
Hemiodus langeanii is a small, elongate, laterally compressed characin typical of the genus's streamlined, fast-water body plan. FishBase records a maximum length of 5.5 in standard length for the species, based on male and unsexed specimens — a genuinely small fish by the standards of this atlas section, closer in scale to a large tetra than to the pacus and true piranhas that share the wider "Piranhas & Pacus" group. The original description's holotype measured roughly 5 in SL, consistent with that maximum.
As in other Hemiodus, the body is silver and torpedo-shaped, built for holding position and darting through moving water rather than for the deep-bodied ambush profile of a piranha. Detailed pattern and fin-marking differences that separate H. langeanii from its congeners are set out in the original 2012 description; this atlas does not have independent access to that diagnosis and does not attempt to restate species-level meristic detail beyond what is documented above.
Habitat
The species is known from the Rio Amana, within the Rio Maués-Açú drainage, straddling the Pará/Amazonas state border in the Brazilian Amazon basin — a single, narrowly defined river system rather than a broad multi-basin range. FishBase documents it from slow-moving sections of freshwater river as well as from mining ponds within that drainage, at depths of roughly 1.0 to 5.0 metres.
Recorded water conditions are warm and only mildly acidic: temperature around 79–82 °F and pH 6.4–6.8. That places it in comparatively gentle, near-neutral water rather than the extreme soft blackwater sometimes assumed for Amazonian characins — the cached data gives no indication of markedly acidic or very soft conditions for this particular species, and none should be assumed beyond what is documented here.
Feeding
Hemiodus as a genus are unfussy grazers rather than predators: in the wild they feed on biofilm, algae and other plant matter scraped from submerged surfaces, supplemented opportunistically with other food items, and FishBase and hobby sources describe the genus as readily accepting live, frozen and dried foods alongside a plant-matter component in captivity. Nothing in the available sources suggests H. langeanii departs from this genus-typical grazing, omnivorous diet.
In practice this means a mixed diet is appropriate wherever the species is kept: quality flake or pellet foods with a vegetable component, occasional live or frozen fare, and access to algae or blanched greens to cover the grazing side of its natural feeding behaviour. No species-specific feeding study is available beyond this genus-level picture.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Hemiodus langeanii in the sources consulted for this article, and the genus as a whole has no well-established aquarium spawning record to draw on. Hemiodus are shoaling, open-water fish, and where courtship has been observed in related species it follows the general pattern of many shoaling characins — pairing or grouping activity within the school rather than fixed pair-bonding — but this atlas does not have a documented account specific to H. langeanii and will not invent one.
External sexual dimorphism is likewise undocumented for this species in the available sources; no reliable way to visually distinguish males from females has been recorded.
Breeding
There is no confirmed aquarium breeding record for Hemiodus langeanii, and FishBase notes the same absence of breeding data for most of its congeners — this is an honest gap in the literature rather than an oversight here. Unlike the true piranhas of this atlas section, which are documented substrate-spawning egg-guarders, or the pacus and Prochilodus-type migrators, which are farm- and hormone-bred at commercial scale, Hemiodus has essentially no aquarium or aquaculture breeding literature behind it.
Given the shoaling, open-water habits of the genus, an egg-scattering strategy without parental care would be the general expectation for a hemiodontid, consistent with many other schooling Characiformes — but this is an inference from genus behaviour, not a documented fact for this species, and should be treated as such.
In the aquarium
Hemiodus langeanii is not established in the aquarium trade under any documented common name, and species-specific husbandry data does not exist. What can be said comes from the genus: Hemiodus are peaceful, fast-swimming shoalers that need to be kept in real numbers — commonly cited as eight or more — in a spacious, well-oxygenated aquarium with strong water movement, since they are naturally fish of moving river water. SeriouslyFish's genus-level guidance for Hemiodus recommends a minimum footprint on the order of 120×45×17.5 in (roughly 65 US gal) for a shoal, with a tight-fitting cover, since these are active, sometimes jumpy fish.
At a maximum of 5.5 in SL, H. langeanii would sit at the small end of the genus and of this atlas section generally — nothing like the space demands of a pacu or a large predatory characin. A mixed diet of prepared foods with a vegetable component, clean, well-oxygenated water at the documented 79–82 °F and near-neutral pH 6.4–6.8, and the company of its own shoal would be the reasonable extrapolation from genus care, but a prospective keeper should treat this as inference rather than a tested aquarium record, since the species itself has no documented aquarium history.
Conservation
Hemiodus langeanii is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient (assessment dated 17 November 2018), reflecting how little is known about its population size, trend or the full extent of its range beyond the Rio Amana/Rio Maués-Açú drainage where it was described. A single-drainage distribution is inherently a conservation watch point — a species known from one river system has little buffer against localised habitat change — but no population decline or specific threat has been documented for this species in the sources available.
The drainage is within the Brazilian Amazon, where the general pressures on regional freshwater fish — including mining activity, which is explicitly noted as one of the habitat types the species occupies (mining ponds) alongside natural river sections — are relevant long-term considerations. There is no evidence in the available sources that H. langeanii is targeted by the aquarium trade or by fisheries.
