Taxonomy & naming
Metynnis mola was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Clarence Hamilton Kennedy in 1903, in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. It belongs to the family Serrasalmidae — the piranhas, pacus and silver dollars — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Metynnis, one of several silver-dollar lineages in the family alongside Myloplus, Tometes and Ossubtus. Serrasalmid taxonomy has been reworked substantially since Eigenmann and Kennedy's day, with species once lumped under broad genera such as Myleus later split out; Metynnis mola has kept its original generic placement.
Silver dollars as a group are frequently confused with one another in the aquarium trade, where several Metynnis and Myloplus species are sold under the same generic "silver dollar" label with little regard for the actual species identity. Reliable identification within the genus typically rests on fin-ray counts, body proportions and dentition rather than colour alone, and hobby stock is not always reliably identified to species.
Morphology
Metynnis mola has the classic silver dollar shape: a strongly laterally compressed, near-circular body that gives the genus its common name, a small terminal mouth, and a bright, mirror-silver flank with a faint olive or yellowish cast that can intensify on the dorsal surface. The anal fin is long-based, as in other serrasalmids, and in life the fish carries none of the piranha lineage's blade-like dentition — the teeth are smaller and adapted for grazing and shredding plant matter rather than slicing flesh.
FishBase records a maximum published length of 6 in total length for the species, a modest size compared with the pacus in the same family, and consistent with its manageable place in a home aquarium relative to its larger relatives.
Habitat
Metynnis mola is native to the Paraguay-Paraná river basin, with records from Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. As a Paraná-basin species it experiences a more markedly seasonal, subtropical climate than the equatorial Amazon proper, and populations there are exposed to cooler conditions during the austral winter than many of their Amazonian relatives.
Within the basin, silver dollars as a group are typically found in vegetated river margins, floodplain lagoons and backwaters where submerged and marginal plant growth is abundant — unsurprising for a fish whose diet centres on grazing. Feeding

Teeth and jaw are adapted to graze and tear soft plant matter and algae rather than to hunt, and in the wild the diet likely includes fallen fruit, seeds and other plant material typical of floodplain habitats, alongside some incidental animal matter.
In the aquarium, keepers feed blanched vegetables — spinach, lettuce, peas, zucchini, cucumber — along with spirulina flakes and algae wafers, supplemented with occasional frozen bloodworm or shrimp for variety. A diet that is too protein-heavy or too meat-based is not appropriate for a fish built to process plant matter.
Mating
Specific courtship behaviour for Metynnis mola is not documented in the cache, but silver dollars in the genus are described generally as shoaling fish that show little sustained pair-bonding outside of spawning. As with many characins, warm, soft, slightly acidic water is associated with reproductive readiness in the genus, and conditioned adults in a well-fed group are the most likely to spawn.

Metynnis mola is a peaceful schooling fish and should always be kept in a real group — a lone or thinly-kept silver dollar is a skittish, easily startled fish. A group needs genuine swimming room: a spacious aquarium with open water and strong filtration to handle the bioload of a school, sized well beyond what its modest 6 in adult length might suggest, since the fish is deep-bodied and active.
The single most important care note is what this species does to a planted tank: it is a dedicated plant-shredder, and soft-leaved live plants will not survive alongside it. Keepers wanting greenery generally rely on tough, unpalatable species (Java fern, Anubias, Bolbitis) or skip live plants altogether in favour of driftwood and rockwork — a robust, hard-scaped setup rather than a delicate aquascape. Feed the vegetable-forward diet described above, and expect a hardy, undemanding fish once its space and dietary needs are met.
Conservation
